I changed from a 640d to a 335s xdrive in May. I haven't checked the performance but the new car feels quicker than the 6 series to me. Still from what is being said here it might get quicker still as I have only done 2300 miles.
The cars share the same engine, with identical outputs, so the weight advantage will make the 335d faster. The 4wd of the 335d will also make it significantly quicker off the line.
I'm also looking forward to trying the launch control. smile

Yeah my 2wd 335i with KERS struggles to get the power down off the line. Even on the cleanest and driest tarmac. It really needs an LSD.

These cars charge the battery when coasting.

I guess KERS sounds a bit more exciting...same theory, similar system I presume?

It seems to have similar principles as the i8 although not implemented to the same extreme - electric motor for boost and around town, but no futuristic bodywork and half the price.

A rather interesting thread as I'm a pretty new 335d owner too, and have to admit I had similar thoughts when I first got it.

My play car is an S2K, so pretty much the other extreme of power delivery.

I echo what others have said with it being deceptively quick. The pull is instant and pretty strong for a long time (compared to other diesels I've tried). Also being a bit higher of the ground means it doesn't feel quick, though looking at the speedo and anyone trying to keep up in the rear view mirror disappearing into the distance confirms that is it rather nippy.

For me, this is the first auto I've had, while the ZF box is awesome, it does take some getting used to. If the car knows it needs to go quick, like from a standing start, then fine, though if you need to quickly speed up (for say a safe overtake) then using the paddles to drop into the power band makes the whole thing much quicker, rather than the auto trying to work out what you want.

Not heard of the car loosening up before, I've just hit 2800 miles so will keep an eye on this!

Most cars do, lots of talk on f30 post (bimmerpost) about the engine giving its best after a few k have been put on once everything has bedded in.

I have had my 330d s drive since may 1st this year, the engine felt very tight and a little held back at first, i now have nearly 9k miles on the clock and its a diffeent beast, sport mode shove is very addictive. Its a great car, i love it.

Just out of interest last night I ran a stopwatch run to 60mph from 1mph rolling start in Sport+ Manual mode.

5.2 secs which for such a massive car in incredible - quicker than the E34 M5 in fact.

That's progress.

What type of car was this?

The 335d official figure is 4.8 sec to 100 km/h, so around 4.6 to 60. A lot quicker than an E39 M5

535d M Sport, and do bear in mind that I did not use Launch Control, I pressed the throttle gently to get the car moving and then put it to the floor. There was a bit left for mechanical sympathy!!

BMW do an app that has a 0-62 timer on it, quite difficult to be accurate with a stop watch but not a bad ballpark figure.

I had it on my M3, available for iphone/itouch, M laptimer IIRC you need the apps thingy on your BMW as well, but I guess you've got that.

Also has G meter etc...
