So I have been handed my Grandads engraved watch from 1979 with everything including service history from Rolex orginal box etc. The question is we have in a safe which is put away in the house but do I get it valued to pass this information on the insures. plus theres a collection of WW2 medals including the Burma Star

Then Engraving is from Scottish and Newcastle Brewery I will post some pictures later

Why not?
i.e. why would you not want to pop it into a decent watch shop and get a valuation, then put the valuation in the safe with the rest of the paperwork. Seems the thing to do.

It's useless if the safe is destroyed along with the watch and valuation!

Have it valued but keep the certificate seperate!

Not rolex - as with a vintage piece, there is a high probability it will come back with replacement dial, hands, and an over polished case - and they will not return any original parts that are removed.

A plexiglass crystal is pennies, and a strap cost depends entirely on what you want. Find a well recommended indy (I am sure the usual suspects will be along later and recommend some) and they will do exactly the same job, for less, and keep the watches character intact.

This advice definitely applies to the OP too if you are thinking of getting it serviced.

For a modern/current piece, sure send it to rolex...but for a vintage piece, think very very carefully before you do. They see their job as to return it to as near as new condition as possible.

biglaugh True but my safe is fireproof too. Anyway, I've also got scans of the valuations along with scanned pictures of my watches and wife's jewellery stored in my PC which is backed up elsewhere...

I used Stephen Burrage of Ryte Time http://www.rytetimewatchrepairs.co.uk/ after several recommendations on here and was very impressed. Cost was around £150 for a 1999 Omega Speedmaster (which I mention because he charges slightly more for chronos).

Find a good independent instead. You'll get a better price and better end result.

It feels wonderful to where so light on your wrist. Will now keep to pass on to my children. There is also a very similar Sekonda watch in the box as well from 1970 which was used daily until he passed away again everything original

The engraving says

1941-1971 Scottish and Newcastle Brewery.

Currently going through everything. and with them is the service book and other documents about the war. Will frame them alongside my medals so there is history of my side of the family for my daughter when she grows up.

My Grandpa binned all his medals after the war.
Such a pity as they would have been amazing to pass on through the generations.
I kinda understand why you would though.
