I'd like to be able to tow a bike - primarily behind an RV but it would be handy to be able to tow behind a car too (when I'm too whimpish to do a long haul trip on a bike but fancy having one around when I get to t'other end.

Thoughts on which are the best trailers (if we were talking cars I's go straight to default mode Brian James but know nought about bike trailers) would be much appreciated.

Cheers all.

I've got a Trail-Tek (which is basically a Trelgo) 2 bike jobbie. Good and solid, very stable.

Got it from a place in Michedever Junction. I think..

They might be expensive, but you can get a 2nd hand one for around £2k. You can always sell it for pretty much the same money. Plus your bike doesn't get covered in road grime, and is more secure.

I have done both and box trailer wins every time.

Thanks. Can't get my head round an Ifor Williams at all - to me they're all about sheep and horse shXt! Whereas Brian James are the MoSpo guys.

Seriously though, I do see the value in a covered (box) trailer but don't want the extra bulk - albeit mainly visual rather than weight. Ideally I'd like a single bike trailer and then will be happy to fit cover over bike although it might be easier to leave it exposed as I have visions of lots of flapping etc.

Thanks for thoughts so far.

I wanted rid of my Trelgo single bike trailer cheap to someone who'd use it, advertised it on here for 80quid and after 6 weeks not a sniff. Stuck it on eBay at 90 quid and it sold in less than an hour.

Shame we can't tout our bits and bobs out to biker banterers.

moanthebairns - Prices - for conventional open trailers seem to be between £400 - £800 that's for single bike capacity at the lower £ end to double bike at the higher. westerntowing.co.uk and trailertek.com are the two sites I've found so far.

Hoping for a few more first hand reviews/experiences here as it's certainly true in the car world that some trailers are better (more stable/whatever) than others.

Is it worth considering a van. I paid 1221 for my 06 plate Ducato van, 3 k miles since March running about and never missed a beat.

I LOVE my van, don't know why but it's brilliant having one!

eek I don't think that 'the powers that be' would appreciate a Euro jaunt/long weekend/whatever in a van!

One thing to be wary of with bikes on a trailer is being followed and targeted by tea leafs. Vans are generally a bit safer but still not safe.

Mine has a bed in it!

How about and RV that will take a bike in the garage? Super Rigg? Even some roller teams will fit a bike?

Most motorhomes don't have a right lot of payload; I suspect that a couple of hundred kilos of bike will leave most UK sized motorhomes somewhat compromised.

yes

I spoke to a chap and had a look around his motorhome with a 'garage' out back and he can just about get away with a Mk1 Velocette in the back. And they're light enough I can lift one on my own, so nothing like 200kg!

I bought a Motolug HDE a few weeks ago, as yet I've not had chance to use it, but it is a very well made piece of kit. I had to get the HDE as my Victory is too long and heavy for the the standard one. The SE Plus, which comes as a single, but the bits to convert it to a twin are available, if required.

So far I've assembled and dis-assembled it twice, stamped it for wheel position for my bikes, and I reckon about 10 minutes to assemble in future. I keep the pins and straps in the car at all times, so I can't forget them! There have been comments about falling over the light bar when unloading the bike, to those people I'd say you should have taken them off first!

Plus, if you have a motorhome, take the thing to bits and store it in the motorhome garage.

I bought a second hand Bateson van trailer for £1500. Probably get that if I sold it.

Although the car drinks petrol towing it.
