Is it worth going to the beginning of a race like this? Will I be able to get near the bikes/riders or will they be in a pen fenced off away from the public?

The race goes past the end of my road, albeit in the neutralised section but want to know if it's worth me getting into Camberley instead..
Most definitely. Two or three years ago a stage started in Exeter. I got there early as all the buses arrived and you could wander round as you liked. The riders were mingling with the crowds (except Cav's HTC squad, they all stayed in their bus) and a few were happy for a chat as they made their way to the start. Fortunately on that day the stage finished in Exmouth (it was a virtual reverse of this year's stage) so it was a short ten mile trip to the finish where you could mingle with the riders at the end too.

I'll be watching stage 7 pass through Horsham, it's the first sprint of the day smile

Not planned my route yet, but have the day off for the Devon stage.

Maybe see them off in Exmouth, fly along the path to Topsham somewhere, then try to beat them to Haytor, before rolling back to Exeter for the finish.

Stage 6 ends about 3 miles from where I live. I may be going to a conference, but if I don't go, I will be watching it somewhere on the local streets smile

I'm thinking of trying to watch Stage 7 in two places........

(1) Cycle from home to Cuckfield (approx 45km) to see them blast through the village
(2) Cycle to the top of Ditchling, via the SDW off the A273 (approx 20km - I reckon I've got at least 2 hrs to do this acc to the ETA schedule)
(3) Cycle home (approx 65km) or fall into a train at Burgess Hill.

What do you experts think, feasible? After the field has passed, I'm assuming I will be able to cross the route at Cuckfield. Although my aim would be to get there before the closures and cross.

cheers,

When's the Camberley stage on? I guess that's the closest to Southampton.
