Hi All,

I think it could be time for me to move on from my current position.

However, whilst I'm sure it's going to management of some type.... that's the issue: nailing it down.

Here's the "bad" news - my current role is in Further & Higher Education (boooo/hisss - I know, I know. But I AM one of the good guys, honest!)
I'm an Operational Level manager, and I also lecture.
The other bad news is that it's rather "niche"...... Music & Sound Engineering.

They're the 2 bad things. I'm hoping that they won't be insurmountable.

The good stuff -

I've been a successful manager for the last 15 years. In terms of man-management, and change-management, I'm very strong - performance related? Most definitely! smile
Sound Engineering requires intense attention to detail. Being able to work to strict deadlines, managing situations and people (negotiation skills).

Quals - aside from audio-related stuff, Cert-Ed, I've got L5 Diploma in Management, and L7 Diploma in Strategic Management. Even have some Mentoring quals. Due to being a record producer, both of these quals were more so formalising what I knew (although I did learn a lot).

So, documented proven track record, high level of quals, years of experience - a LOAD of transferable skills. Apple-literate.

I don't want to stay in formal teaching per se, although I quite like the idea of training. I also work for exam boards, auditing and verifying work, so I've got that to consider as an attribute as well.

Despite living in rural Herefordshire, I've got no problems looking elsewhere (it would involve a weekly commute/stay) - and for that matter, even Dubai, Abu Dhabi etc.

The question is - what sort of roles do you think are out there for someone in my position? (even better if you know of any wink )

At a bit of a crossroads tbh. Need some clarity.

This is a difficult one for Saturday afternoon, but I'll try to help...and not be too harsh as you need to narrow this down a lot!

From your description, I can clearly see that you're entrenched in academia. You've made a list of qualifications and skills whilst ignoring what you can actually bring to a job.

i.e. You've started with a very general description, but really you need to nail down what you are actually good at and what you can't do. What distinguishes you from the rest?? For Example - Are you good at inspiring change, leading change or executing change? Are you good at strategic alignment, strategic execution or strategic innovation?

You might also want to try an on-line Myers Briggs test to get a feel for your type.

Other Qs...that are none exhaustive
What salary do you want to earn? More or less than now?
Do you want to work for HM Gov, a multinational or a medium/small company?
Do you want to be customer facing? General public facing, Business facing or sit in a room on your own?
Do you want to be in operational, project or programme management or not at all?
What industry would you like to work in / not work in.

From what I see at the moment you might want to consider training people in management, but there must be more options out there wink

Many thanks for this - nothing wrong with "too harsh" (not that I thought that anyway smile )
You're right - I've been caught up in Education for a while. This is where I think the change comes in.

I want a new challenge.

Time is on my side - ie I'm not out on my ear or anything!
Will take this on board and have a think smile

Nice one.

Rather than attempt to work out what your current skills will allow you to do; why not work out what it is that you really want to do? When you've worked that out, identify if you're fully, partially or not at all qualified. Then work out if there is a gap how you can fill it with training or experience and tackle it that way. Good luck!

Good idea Roger.

I enjoy training and management, but the way the Education sector is going, along with the fact that at my current employers, I've pretty much hit my glass ceiling (my face is crushed against it tbh!)

So I was think along the lines of private sector training - or as part of a HR remit for developing staff.

I think this is viable with the skills I've got - the music production may be seen as a hindrance. I don't want to go back in to this full time, as whilst it was good, there's a BIG case of "rose-tinted" specs! biggrin And I don't want to lose my life again - 20 hour days were the norm.

I would like to get into composing, but I'm realistic that this isn't going to be a full-time career. I still have commitments to meet, so even a balancing job might be an option. Sadly the bottom-line figure is also quite important, but I want to disregard this and aim higher. Much higher.

Make sense?

I would have made a similar suggestion. This is a sector in flux and I suspect there will be all sorts of opportunities emerging. Good time to jump in and take a risk.
