Hi all,

I'm very new to the TVR scene having rescued a 1997 Chimaera 500 from being scrapped.

It's currently in the shop being assessed and the shopping list is already becoming quite large.

Some parts, like a clutch kit, are proving to be quite expensive (£500 from what I can see). Can anyone recommend what replacement parts I should buy from the following list? I don't want to scrimp on the restoration but at the same time I really can't afford to spend a whole load currently.

Front and rear brake discs and pads
1 rear N/S caliper
4 tyres
Full clutch kit

This list will no doubt grow, but that's where I am currently.

Thanks very much in advance for the help, and I look forward to contributing what I can to the community.

Greg

Not sure about the clutch but brakes are Ford Sierra, so easy to find!

These links might help in general, if not already aware ,although maybe not for your specific questions:

http://www.parkersteve.dsl.pipex.com/chimaeraparts...

and

http://www.chimaerapages.com/resources_partslist.p...

which, in theory, should give the same answers.

Why was it going to be scrapped? Well rescued though :-)

It's been sitting SORNed in a residential car park for 2 years. That was against the rules of the apartment deeds and the resident eventually got pissed off, called the council and it was a case of leave it and pay a £2500 fine, or get rid of it.

Fortunately for me the owner was lazy and couldn't be arsed with the hassle of dealing with it. Luckily I had a mate who could recover it for me that same day.

Hey presto! I own a Chimaera! smile

The standard disks and pads really aren't expensive if you can fit them yourself.

This is similar to what happened with mine, but a 4.5. She was sat on an industrial estate for over 18 months and was very neglected. Threw a silly price at the owner the 2nd time round at viewing and he accepted, as the tax was about to expire. £600 in parts later and she's almost ready to pass an MOT.
There ARE bargains to be had out there, and TVRs to be saved from impending doom.

As for the rear calipers, I believe they are Sierra Cosworth items.

Good on you for saving another Chimaera! Good luck with her, and welcome to the community.

AP Racing heavy duty clutch kit £456 plus delivery on Power's website, without fitting and gaskets. There must be others, but you would use the best when doing the job, shirley?

The 500 version has a different clutch to the others I think. Heavier duty, which is often used for the 450 as well. £383 + VAT here:

I bought a new clutch for my 400 (but went for the AP Racing 500 clutch) and it wasn't too much money. I am sure it was around £300 for the complete kit. I'll have to dig out the receipt tonight to see where I bought it from.

Edit, I think this is what I bought. Mine was definitely an AP Racing clutch plate.

Don`t bother with Techaclutch and the Reacetech ones are a good make Borg&Beck but mine did not last very long in a nearly standard 4l

This is the one above TVR Power sell

Friction Plate: CP2346-4

CP2346-4 is £138.04 - http://www.part-box.com/product_info.php?products_...

John Eales said the one listed above was the strongest available without going back to a paddle clutch.

When I bought my car one of the main selling points were that it had a new clutch fitted a couple of years before and had only done about 10,000 miles since. 6 months later it was slipping irked

Figured that something must be broken in there, leaking oil onto it or something so took it apart. Nope it was just the clutch slipping and to be honest it didn't look too worn, it was just crap and not gripping. Looked through the receipts and it was a techniclutch fast road one, couldn't believe the amount of slagging off one company could get after googling them hehe

I got one from racetech too, the kits a bit crap iirc, think the bearing or the arm was plastic so I got another, but the plate was perfect.
