Help please! After a few choice words and a great deal of frustration I thought the dash was nearly ready to go back and then found two lights soldered and there doesn't seem an obvious way to take them off and fit them to the new one. I'm probably missing something obvious but I've never soldered before if that's what I need to do?

Get a soldering iron, hold it on the two terminals and apply a little pressure until you can pop the circuit board off.
I bought a soldering iron just for this job but it does come in handy now and then.

I bought a soldering iron for Alex to put my car wiring back together after a rodent attack, but it came in handy when I had to solder a bypass for a bad connector terminal on the heater fan control box. Well pleased with my efforts.

Its an LED - has to go back on the same way it came off, so mark the terminals somehow (diagram, pen etc)

If you are buying a soldering iron get a gas one not 240v
Being able to solder anywhere is massively useful.

Think the board and LED complete should carefully pull out of the ally bezel that presses through from the front of the dash. Just a snug fit, glass envelope into ally, maybe held with a dab of hot glue or silicone etc. The pic shows the bezel is missing its retaining star washer (prolly not a problem as they are normally pretty tight and need to be pressed in). Again, can be bonded - have used sikkaflex

Mine were well glued in, but was eventually able to pick out and release with a compass point.
Replacement star nuts of the correct diameter are available at a price from the usual suspects.
At the time i was not brave enough to use a soldering iron, but i'm sure that is the easiest and quickest way.
