Quick question for you learned types...

My car has a terrible fuel filler/tank earth whereby filling up can take 10 minutes as you have to trickle the petrol in otherwise the pump clicks off.

I'm hoping this is a fault, and not just character...!

Is it likely to be something as simple as a corroded earth to the tank or some such?

I don't think that your problem is anything to do with earthing or bonding,
although both are important to stop a static charge building up.
It's just the petrol "backing up" the filler neck & triggering the filler nozzle cut-off.

I find that if you engage the petrol pump dispenser nozzle with the trigger facing away from you, you can regulate the fuel flow to allow a faster rate, due to the angle the fuel is dispensed.
If you hold it as you would naturally and pull the trigger to the max, it just "glugs" & shuts it off.

Hope this makes sense smile

I do the same, I find that having the pump on the drivers side works best as the gun is naturally at the right angle when stretched across the car. Still a bit slow though.

Just a thought, is you tank inlet clear, there were anti-siphon devices on the market a while back that you could fit in the filler neck.

What Glen says.

I stand to the right of the filler cap; rotate the pump head 90 degrees clockwise which puts the end of the nozzle at the 9 o'clock position in the neck. I can get a real good flow when adopting this position.

Practice on this one - I just fire it at an angle to the first bend which seems to prevent it backing up - but it means I have to hold the fuel gun slight out of the filler neck - it also means I have to watch the fuel level coming up the filler neck in case it overflows!. I have never managed to fill up with it fully inserted and on maximum delivery. Part of the "classic car" experience I guess.

Thanks for all the feedback.

For once in my life I was hoping there was actually a problem with the car!

If you ever see someone aggressively filling up an S3 for long periods of time and with unusual posture, its probably me trying to find a place where petrol will actually flow relatively freely...

I don't think I have a blockage/anti-siphon issue, but I will double check.
