I think the infrastructure and processes have changed since Ted's days. As I said before, things have changed and surely this thread is proof that we do want to provide what the forums want????
Close the other threads then and just leave one Porsche forum, it's not a challenge beyond the realm of a tech.

As for providing what the forum wants, how many polls on the Porsche forum does one need to prove the point?

+1

And this forum hardly attracts the volume of traffic that would justify splitting.

I may be imagining it but Subaru related threads seem to have increased since it got its own forum.

Combining Subaru back in would be good!

This place gets almost no traffic so you'd have almost nothing to lose by splitting it up. Most people will just post in General instead, which is a shame when a lot of people who are more knowledgeable about Japanese cars will probably look in here.

Personally I don't bother with here much (despite owning a Japanese import car) because there's never been a Nissan subforum but regardless of what happens I think this part of the forum is largely dead. Like someone else said, people are just tending to go and sign up on their respective owners clubs instead.

I will say however that regardless of whether it's split, the name needs changing as suggested. May not be a widely known thing but 'Jap' is a racial slur. Probably a good idea to change it, even if it's just to 'Japan/Japanese chat'.

Keep it as it is IMO. Split it anymore and we might as well just have links to other site specific forums. Splitting it will also get people to start using GG for simple questions as they'll expect more responses there.

Edit - Yeah, it's all been said already above. I should really read before posting.

The only advantage of creating more marque specific sub-forums (Toyota, Nissan, etc) would be to act as an index and avoid one having to wade through pages of irrelevant stuff. I'm not sure the number of posts in each sub-forum is particularly relevant. It's not as if a split is not going to make a significant difference in terms of server capacity.

I'm not overly bothered myself if it remains 'as is' because as the number of threads which come up in my particular area of interest is not that large and I just look at the title to find them.

Look at how little traffic it has. If you split it up further there'll be nothing in some forums.
This sums it up for me. Fine as it is.

A seperate forum for Suzuki Ignis Sport owners only could work though.

So 60% voting for 'No'.

So, we should expect the forum split any day now?

The term came up in Biker Banter yesterday and attracted a degree of opprobrium.

It seems that the term 'Jap' really is quite offensive in the States and with ex-pat Japanese communities. Not N-Word offensive, but offensive none the less.

Perhaps you should consider renaming.

I missed that on BB

As many here or the majority are from the UK. and it's based as a UK forum and as the UK don't generally find the work "Jap" to be a issue I cannot see a real problem on Pistonheads.

If the forum, mods and admins took every possible offensive word from every people who does not live in the UK we would have many words that would be in the sware filter along with fk etc...

Shall we stop using the word: Eskimo, God forbid Honky, jock, Jerry, paddy, Wetback

Well I live and learn

Bold says it all, really. That's what's wrong with this country.

For me, it's about showing respect. I am a big (classic) Japanese car fan, and have a lot of respect for the stylists, designers and engineers who were behind the cars I own and the cars I appreciate. I've been lucky enough to meet and become friends with a few of them. I also appreciate the work of the faceless and nameless guys on the assembly line who put them together so well, and the guys who took them racing and rallying.

Writing, saying - and thinking - the word 'Japanese' in full doesn't take that much effort, surely? If you like Japanese cars (or bikes), it shouldn't be such a struggle.

I find it hard to take a forum section called "Jap Chat" seriously. That's why I don't spend too much time here. I know others who feel the same.

You're not forced to use the site and you're free to leave at any time. By virtue of the fact that you don't spend much time here questions why you'd want the site changed so that you can use it more.

If it's not broken, don't fix it.

And it's not broken.

Fair points but are you genuinely offended by it? Really?
