Hotel/B&B in bath
Discussion
Afternoon
It's mine and the wife's first anniversary, along with her 31st on the same day (I'll shouldn't ever forget either!), and I'm planning to take her to Bath for the first weekend in November.
Anyone stayed anywhere nice in Bath? Any recommendations on hotels, places to see and eat? Any decent bars for a few beers/cocktails? We'd like to stay in the centre itself, but don't want anything opposite the local club. Something a sort walk away would be perfect.
We're in our early 30's and are leaving the kids with the grandparents!
Cheers

We're going there next week, staying in the central Travelodge because a) it looks alright b) it's central to everything and c) it's not overly priced
We looked at a few others, some had restaurants, some had great restaurants, but we're planning to do some sightseeing (Jane Austin stuff) and take in the spa + Roman baths, as well as a run out to places nearby, so werent too fussed about where we set our heads down, long as it's clean and tidy.
I think it was Halcyon Hotel we looked at as first option on a recommendation, but it was pricey and then booked out. I found that lots of places were quite expensive for what they were compared to other cities we've been to like for like, and you can always get food anywhere you fancy

Just got back (a month ago) from a long weekend in Bath with the OH. Look up Gray's Boutique on Tripadvisor. It's where we stayed and is brilliant. Rooms are fantastic, private parking and the breakfast was top notch. Walking distance to the town centre (albeit on a hill) is about 15 mins. Recommended.
Also, if you like good Italian, try Sotto Sotto.
Edit - if you can get in, try Menu Gordon Jones - we couldn't get in as it was booked up but it is supposed to be very good. Plus for drinks look up the Gin bar - no prizes for guessing what it sells - some 130 odd types of gin (if that's your thing)

This place is lovely: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g186370-...
We stayed there last year. I've been in a lot of hotels around the world but this genuinely is one of the nicest places I've ever stayed. The family that run it are very friendly, the husband especially has great chat. Go for the room with the four poster bed.
The town centre is about 15 mins walk away.
So weekend before last we spent the night here. And...it was indeed lovely. Superb and interesting hosts, great views, brilliant pets that are very much a part of the experience and a cracking breakfast. Recommended and also to g3org3yWe stayed there last year. It's a very nice hotel as mentioned, recommended.

it's been a long time since I stayed in Bath. But back then the place of choice was the Royal Crescent Hotel. We had a very pleasant weekend there.
It wasn't cheap, even back then, but the service was impeccable and you could walk to all the historic sites and attractions.
Time to go back, I think! (There goes a bundle of money...)

Bath Spa hotel, been many times and have managed to get really cheap rooms if you check usual hotel websites. Has a brilliant pool indoor/outdoor, spa, sauna etc. Massive rooms and not too far a walk into town.
Have used Holiday Inn Express in Bath which is fine for cheapish hotel, small work into town and decent enough rooms, but the car parking can be a bit of a nightmare if it is busy.

Many moons ago I used to work there. Take some earplugs. It is a noisy building.
Third floor is best bet, you do not want to be in the annex if you can help it.
Check out trip adviser for a laugh!
Dukes.
Stayed about 6 weeks ago for two nights, also early 30's.
Really really friendly staff, short walk to the centre.
We had the roxborough room which was right on the top floor lower rooms did look nicer.
Breakfast superb, parking included FOC.
Highly recommended if you don't want a corporate chain.
For food go to Koh Thai Tapas, dead chilled, "cool" place to eat for one night. On your other night go to Sotto Sotto but make sure you book in advance.
Do the free walking your too - pretty interesting.
Oh do take her to the Therma Spa too. It's quite nice.

Just playing devil's advocate here... my advice would be to give Bath a miss (far too many foreign tourists and geared towards them) and come to Bristol instead, much more to see and do... you could then always jump on the train to Bath for a couple of hours (takes a fraction over 10 minutes to get there) and see the sights, plenty of time. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy going to Bath but I also like coming home again.
Whatever you decide to do, the West Country is a great place and you will have a fab time!
This is supposed to be very good though not been yet...

Evening guys
I thought I'd bump this up and ask for restaurant recommendations.
Sotto Sotto are fully booked on the night I want, and Gordon jones are closed till the 14th oct, so I don't know if I'd be too late to get a table there, or if the books open on this date.
If there's any other pukka places to try, please let me know!
Cheers

We went to Joya just off the bridge then on to a jazz club underneath the Halcyon from dinner.

The Maitre d' is a really nice bloke from Rotherham and looks after you well.
PS - having been, I can answer the Travelodge question now. We stopped at the Riverside one, not the one in town so things were a bit quieter. Also, right over the road from the Travelodge in town is a really nice pub/restaurant place with a huge garden out back that did an amazing all day breakfast inc pancakes

We recently stayed at http://www.2crescentgardens.co.uk/
and had a meal just along the road at The Hop Pole.
I'd recommend both. Bath is lovely, can't wait to go back.
