For example, there were a huge number of legendary "affordable" performance cars introduced in 1986 - Lancia Delta 4WD, Sierra Cosworth, E30 M3 to name but a few

Well... I already do! Drive a 1990 Corrado 1.8 16v.

Given the choice of any cars though, I think I'd probably pick the E34 M5. Drop in a supercharged LS engine and have some fun on the commute

1994, would have to be one of these. Although the choice in this year does seem to be fairly limited.
