yes I know it's a facelift E38, I couldn't find a decent picture I liked of a pre-facelift

Really? Or am I missing the sarcasm here?

For example, there were a huge number of legendary "affordable" performance cars introduced in 1986 - Lancia Delta 4WD, Sierra Cosworth, E30 M3 to name but a few

Well... I already do! Drive a 1990 Corrado 1.8 16v.

Given the choice of any cars though, I think I'd probably pick the E34 M5. Drop in a supercharged LS engine and have some fun on the commute tongue out

1994, would have to be one of these. Although the choice in this year does seem to be fairly limited.
