Naive question - could the performance issues I have been experiencing (slow running, unresponsive keys, scrolling through screens etc on its own...) be caused by my not switching it off (After being switched off it seems like all's well until it gradually slows etc during the ensuing hours and days) or is that just a figment of my imagination?

...or is it plain faulty?

more likely is that over time the version of android has been updated putting more load on it, and you have more apps running in the background also slowing things down.

My Nexus 7 Gen1 is exactly the same, very sluggish. Upgrade on the way!

BTW its the same with apple kit too; not just an android thing, but it can be worse on android.

Yes that will almost certainly be the reason.

There are a couple of things to try.

Install Forever Gone and run it.
Or
Wipe the cache

Clean Master is on the phone and that cleans all the crap out.

Move some of the apps over onto the SD card too.

Like what?

You can't uninstall the default/core apps, but you can disable them:

Forever Gone will do sweet FA and it has lots of warnings about running it on 4.4 +.

Wipe which cache? There are at least 3 (Dalvik,Parition and App). Clearing the the App cache may well slow your device down not speed it up as the Apps may well need to rebuild non persistent data.

The only time it is a good idea to clear the Dalvik cache is after an upgrade. Clearing the Dalvik cache means Android has to rebuild and optimize each app as it is run after the clear down so it will mean apps will load more slowly the first time they are run after the Dalvik-Cache is cleared.

Wiping the partition cache will give you more room which may or may not have an affect on performance.

Which means your apps take up 15-20% more space than when on Dalvik. Dalvik is still the default run time and ART is experimental and not production ready in KitKat.

I changed it to see if it made any difference, it didn't and I left it be.

2 thing ive found are that

A. chrome is now bloated, it was originally 2mb the tablet version, i recently uninstalled all the updates and disabled it as it had got to 224mb (my tablet only has 1gig of internal storage)

B. some apps create a folder (its usually the same folder for all apps) that images etc are store in temperarily but if the app is badly coded (bit hit and miss this) then these files arent deleted, have a look on your tablet for a folder with lots of files in and take a look to see if its .jpgs and the like.

The other problem I seem to have is that the google apps seem to update every bloody day.

Im pretty fed up of android im glad i dont have an android phone.

I have a Yoga 10 and I leave it switched on pretty much all the time and it doesn't seem to slow down.
I did the 4.4 update, still runs ok and it's quite a different look than before and it now matches my phone.

It is, isn't it - a bit "full on".

A bit of a tale of two halves since the upgrade - still a little reluctant to respond to the unlock screen, but definitely better once you're in. Battery life was already good, but it now seems extraordinary, barely running down at all.

I'll carry on fiddling, and in particular moving some apps to the card and see if that improves things further.

Certainly agree with the battery life! I think I charge mine up about every 3 weeks!

Nop, it's ridiculous, I'm sitting here watching it cycling through network connections entirely on its own, bringing up password screens, icons, emoticons, the works.

Damn thing's a liability.

Started off fine for a week or so, then got unresponsive, then had an epiphany and was fine for 3 weeks and now it's just hopeless.

Still scrolling, although it seems to be getting tired as it's doing it more slowly...

Sound like a hardware (touch screen) problem to me. To confirm this you can do a couple of things. Reboot into safe mode and see if the problem goes away (in which case it's a dodgy app. You can also download YAMTT form the play store to see if you get ghost touches. Make sure you clean the screen before trying this.

Forgive the ignorance but how do I rebot into safe mode?
