I currently do not own a laptop but could do with one. I pretty much just need it for browsing the web and syncing my phone to it, bit of music and running diagnostics on my car.

What would be the recommendations offered here for a laptop?

Same as ever - you will struggle to beat just spending your budget at Dell, unless you can find the same spec or better on the Dell Outlet.

1. Reconditioned
2. End of ranges - you may find a sell off a Windows 7 machine at staples or something

Wouldn't a tablet meet your requirements? I have a Dell Venue 8 Pro (runs full Windows) and it is excellent.

Who said I wasnt technical? My day job is fixing Windows servers, SCCM deployments, SCOM monitoring and configuring etc.

I could go out and get a high specced laptop, but I don't need or want one. I just don't live and breathe computers smile

I'd check Dell outlet business machines - they have a vostro 3350 (i5 win 7 professional) for just over £300 incluing VAT. Which should be fairly future proof.

In that case then you will be aware of prices and specs so pretty much any machine with an i3 a large enough drive USB 3 connectors, the right connection (or ability to buy a docking station that connects to your car) and then deceide wether you have a mechanical or SSd drive and how big
its that simple really
