It's all to do with a dispute over who was the rightful heir to the prophet.

It's a People's Front of Judea / Judean People's Front sort of thing.
I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump off.

So I ran over and said "Stop! don't do it!"

"Why shouldn't I?" he said.

I said, "Well, there's so much to live for!"

He said, "Like what?"

I said, "Well...are you religious or atheist?"

He said, "Religious."

I said, "Me too! Are you christian or buddhist?"

He said, "Christian."

I said, "Me too! Are you catholic or protestant?"

He said, "Protestant."

I said, "Me too! Are you episcopalian or baptist?"

He said, "Baptist!"

I said,"Wow! Me too! Are you baptist church of god or baptist church of the lord?"

He said, "Baptist church of god!"

I said, "Me too! Are you original baptist church of god, or are you reformed baptist church of god?"

He said,"Reformed Baptist church of god!"

I said, "Me too! Are you reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1879, or reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1915?"

He said, "Reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1915!"

I said, "Die, heretic scum", and pushed him off.

Rather unfair on Obama I feel, I can't begin to imagine the pressure a US president is constantly under, with ongoing events in Iraq, Syria, North Korea, Nigeria, Ukraine, Israel, as well as riots at home to deal with in Ferguson.

He can't just drop everything when there is a crisis somewhere in the world, everyone needs some relaxation time.

I think he's a fine President from what I have seen.
Elected twice with a decent majority, the voting public agree with you WR. Never has a president had to deal with a congress so twisted and angry that they irrationally block everything the voters choice has tried to do. They accuse him of giving up (who could blame him if he did) and then get apoplexy when he says "screw you" and by passes them with an executive order.

The republicans are getting more desperate by the day as their route to the White House is effectively blocked. Instead of tacking to the centre you can expect another reactionary right wing candidate like Cruz, Pence or Jeb to get the nomination and lose to Hillary in '16.
I am beginning to think Cuomo may have a chance against Hillary for the nomination.

Sorry to go off topic, but can somebody explain (in very simple terms) what the main differences are between Sunni and Shia Muslims, for those that do not know.....(Like myself)

I have had a brief look on the net, but am not that much wiser.

Thanks.
A bad succession Plan for Mo.

When Mo died in the 7th century, some believed he annointed his cousin and son in law to take over (Shia-a contraction of his name). They believe their Ayatollahs are God on Earth.
Others believe in following the Prophet's teachings, the Sunna (Sunnis) directly. 80% of the world's Muslims are Sunni. The Catholic Baptist reference is not too far off.

So, to sum it up, all Muslims believe in one God, Allah. All Muslims believe in the Prophet Mo. After that is where they differ. smile

It might stop a lot of wars from happening. Or people might just find a different excuse.

In hindsight, perhaps. smile

We have to work to reduce sources of conflict, and religion is a biggy.

When I think about it - religion seems to be something that people follow in order to ensure they prevail following their earthly demise. Like an insurance policy to pacify the minds pre programmed concerns with dying.

Unfortunately, they think that their actions on this world will enhance their situation in the next world. Time they learned that this is your one and only life, make the best of it.

More likely it's something that people want other people to follow, backed up by an illusory promise that they will prevail following their earthly demise. Like an insurance policy to pacify the minds pre programmed concerns with dying.

Bear in mind that back in the 1930s religion was well on its way out of fashion, and rightly so, and the ridiculous position in the world today is clear to see.
 • US presidents claiming a hotline to the Almighty
 • Tony Blair claiming a hotline to the almighty
 • Israel set up as a specifically religious state
 • Islamic drivel riding on the back of the above.

The world is a truly fked-up place.
It's getting more fked up by the day , and will continue to do so until the general public realize the Islamic militants have actually taken over their home town and the slaughter has begun there too .
Consensus suggests about 10/15% of all Muslims are hard line extremists ,who really knows ? Take maybe 2 percent as an actual figure and that adds up to quite a force bent on totally ruthless domination , meanwhile nobody seems really see the seriousness of this ,it'll be too late too soon .

As a Iraqi Sunni Muslim I sincerely hope that ISIS gets smashed to pieces with no mercy.

I would back a law stating that any pro-ISIS statement made by anyone in the UK is an act of treason and punished appropriately.

This is how every muslim I know feels both Sunni and Shia.

ISIS seems to be very cult like in its draw on certain people. Cults both evil and good have been around for a long time and have afflicted people of all religions.

For those of you condemning muslims, could I just remind you that barely a generation ago Hitler managed to convince many educated Europeans to commit atrocious acts on millions of civilians, not even having to use religion as an excuse! Many 90 year old German, Japanese or Russian males alive today probably partook in some evil act as bad as what ISIS is committing- think about that.

On another point - that that muslim leaders are not speaking out against ISIS take a look at the following :

A Grand Mufti is the highest Sunni Muslim authority in a particular area.

http://news.yahoo.com/saudi-top-cleric-blasts-qaed...

Riyadh (AFP) - Saudi Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz al-Sheikh on Tuesday blasted Al-Qaeda and Islamic State jihadists as "enemy number one" of Islam, in a statement issued in Riyadh.

"The ideas of extremism, radicalism and terrorism... have nothing to do with Islam and (their proponents) are the enemy number one of Islam," the kingdom's top cleric said.

He cited jihadists from the Islamic State, which has declared a "caliphate" straddling large parts of Iraq and Syria, and the global Al-Qaeda terror network.

"Muslims are the main victims of this extremism, as shown by crimes committed by the so-called Islamic State, Al-Qaeda and groups linked to them," the mufti said, quoting a verse in the Koran urging the "killing" of people who do deeds harmful to Islam.

His stance reflects the Saudi clerical community's hostility towards IS jihadists, known for their brutality......

Egypt's Grand Mufti: http://www.aawsat.net/2014/08/article55335380

Lebanons Grand Mufti: “What is happening in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen and Libya is an enormous tragedy, and the harm we are doing to ourselves is more than what the Israelis can do in Gaza and Palestine.”

He strongly criticized the fundamentalist group Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria’s (ISIS) practices against the Christians of Iraq.

“How is the Christian in Mosul and other areas forced to leave his religion and his home, and how is his life and his family threatened?” Daryan wondered, pledging to show solidarity and support to Christians oppressed by extremist Muslims."

But because it doesn't turn up on the Daily Mail website it apparently never happened according to some on here wink

Very outstanding..

I still have not seen any muslim 'leader' speak out firmly against IS stated aim of a Caliphate, under Shariah.

Plenty condemning the horrifically violent acts, and plenty stating that such barbarism has no place in this world. But to date, not one Muslim that I have seen has come out and stated quite clearly that they prefer Western values and Democracy to Islamic States vision (as per the Koran) of a Caliphate.

So, until I hear exactly that, I shall have to presume that Muslims would prefer such a global state to exist, and, if so, there can be much condemning of the methods, but the fact would remain that the stated aim has the support of followers of Islam.

I hope to be proven wrong.
Am I reading you correctly? You want Islamic leaders to say "we prefer the Western values to the Koran"? Whilst they will condemn ISIS they will never do as you ask. The whole Caliphate thing is just an ISIS interpretation of the Koran. Much the same as some in the west view Gay marriage as against the bible whilst others don't. Interpretation.

I would add that ISIS are all fecking fruit loops and need to be destroyed.
