So a high value prisoner is being held also I assume?

As an aside do we know how many Brits are currently being held?

It appears it's all kept very quiet until they make an appearance in a video.

It seems that Cantlie has been held for rather along time?

Look where they came from.

Western intervention causes some Muslims to radicalise. Without the fight of the west they are just one islamic nation fighting a bunch of radical butters. If we and the US start joining in then they have a stronger brand appeal. Al Qaida were never that strong - they just looked great because they were "fighting" the west.
You do not need to be strong, just clever.

Pilot training, twin towers ring a bell?

Slightly macabre question, but how many UK/US hostages do they actually have, and does this new video suggest they have hit the law of diminishing returns with regards shock tactics? They know the US/UK are not going to negotiate, so there comes a point where executions become futile. Does this shift mean they are weaker and so changing tactics, or simply that the previous hostages were deemed expendable and their executions were purely to get our attention?

Re question 1:

A lot of reports seem to indicate they have anywhere up to 60 western prisoners. I'd imagine there are at least 10-15 or so which will be UK or UK citizens.

Re question 2:

That's a very good question. I wonder if the beheadings we've already seen (Foley, Sotloff, Haines) plus plenty of others (unfortunately probably including Henning) were all done in one go. Not specifically on the same day but perhaps over the course of a week or so. Then they are edited and turned into ISIS propaganda and released as and when they saw fit.

However...

Since the Sotloff & Haines videos the west has been raining down all kinds of st on them and almost certainly destroying some of the command structure. This latest chit-chat video featuring John Cantlie is different. I wonder if it's been made by a different group (within ISIL) and used in a clearly different way.

French aircraft have started attacking targets. Now that Scotland thing is out the way, expect a token force of UK jets to do the same, probably limited to Iraq and leaving the Americans to maybe stray over the border into Syria ?

Good. I like how the French are refusing to call them IS or ISIS anymore saying they are terrorists and not a state. They're calling them 'Daesh cutthroats'. ISIS hate it and getting very wound up by it hehe

Or it could just be mentioning anything with 'Islamic' in the name pisses off people who get embarrassed about their religion being the lead story in the news night after night.

So what do we reckon the Turks have given them? Ransom? Assurances they won't get involved in military action? Won't allow a coalition to use their bases?

Not the way to deal with a bully IMO.

Another propaganda film released. entitled "Flames of War: Fighting Has Just Begun".

https://uk.news.yahoo.com/releases-length-propagan...

A masked IS fighter with a North American accent addresses the camera and claims to be in a captured army base. "We're here with the soldiers of Bashar, you can see them now digging their own graves where they were stationed," he says. As the men work with spades, the anonymous spokesman says: "This is the end they face." The film then cuts to a shot of the Syrian soldiers kneeling down in a line, the masked man again addresses the camera and says: "The flames of war are only beginning to intensify ... the fighting has just begun." He then joins other IS fighters in shooting the captured men in the back of the head, before they each roll forward and fall into the trench.

Interesting article in the Times today saying that the kidnap of an aid worker has been widely condemned by Muslims including AQ and some IS spokesmen. The previous murders are seen as justified by some due to their (tenuous) military connections.

New York bus adverts to stir the poop. Can you imagine these on the side of a London double-decker in Tower Hamlets ?

Mr_B - wish we did see that. I don't agree with all of it, but would love to live in a country where people could express their opinion without fear of being called names and sidelined. If we can't debate things openly we can't change views or appreciate anything other than the party line. Just look at the stick the roofing bloke got for saying something mildly controversial on here.

Rumour has it, that the latest video might not be released. Some feel that the poor chap has already met his maker, but they are realising that his video may turn many more muslims against them, thus actually helping the west and meaning they will not need to get involved. Only a rumour though. Sadly I agree that any chance of him being released is slim. Would be delighted to be proved wrong on this one.

Seems a bit strange. So blowing up hotels in Africa, or peoples place of work in America is fine but oh no don't you dare behead a journalist because that's very very bad.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad such statements are coming out but I do wonder if it's really Al-Q and their like making them or is there something else going on? I get the feeling that our government and media are working very closely on this one (and rightly so).

Even the AlQ know about spin and press coverage for their cause. Might affect their recruitment drive.
