Two questions that I would appreciate any advice on.

1. My eldest is leaving to go to Uni in a few weeks time. It looks like the cover on our home insurance will not stretch to cover her whilst she is away. She will have the usual laptop, phone and personal stuff with her whilst in Halls. Any recommendations for insurance?

2. Secondly we have her insured on my wife's car. Renewal is due and looks like £650 pa with her included, against £150pa without her. After spending 30 minutes on hold I have given up and hope someone on here could indicate a likely 'daily rate' for adding her when she comes home. She may well only need to drive for 10 or so days a year, and £500 seems a lot to pay.

Thanks in advance

Proud, but soon to be even more skint, Dad.

For the contents insurance don't go with the usual Endsleigh (sp), they were a nightmare for my friend and not that cheap. I went with my bank account provider (Nationwide) for mine but didn't have to use them so don't know how good they would be in a claim situation.

I can't really give too much on the car as I took my own. However my Mum just used to put my brothers on for a week (or weeks) at a time when they came back. Cost her the admin fee plus about £50 iirc each time, she is with A-plan...

1. I don't deal with Home insurance but there providers out there who will cover your home and your daughters whilst she's away. They will be more expensive but maybe not as expensive as two separate policies.

2. Nobody can answer that question other than your insurer. The answer could be anything from £0 to infinity and others experience is irrelevant. It may help you choose next year's provider though.

I like the sound of that!

"Yes sir, to go ahead with the policy all we ask is that your monthly salary is paid directly into our account and, if there's anything left, we'll post you a cheque some time. Are you happy to proceed on that basis, Sir?"

Some car insurers will offer non-term time cover; unfortunately I can't remember which we looked at but will be worth a search

Thanks for the above, will try a search for a company that offers cover as you describe re when she is at home. Good advice re Endsleigh as well.

Have to say Endsleigh worked out well for our daughter over her 4 years at uni.

Went with Allianz for home insurance and my son's uni cover.

Cost an extra £10 on top of my premium for something like £3k worth of cover.

Stupidly we paid Endsleigh last year, when the price went up for this year we spoke to our home insurance to see if we could add cover - only to find we have £15k of cover for students included. !!

Sometimes it pays to read all the paperwork.!

Car insurance wise we have a policy where we can put her on for up to 42 days at a time for quite minimal expense...I.e £53 for 28 days. Can't find the policy (wife's car). Will post up the company when I find it

It does stand though, as they may decline to offer cover for her, or offer it at a ridiculous price. We once quoted someone £99,999.99 for their Ducati. That was just a default price that one underwriter quoted to basically say "thanks, but no thanks". Unfortunately as every other underwriter had declined to quote the City-type who'd just bought the bike, bought the cover too.

Despite having student cover included on my home insurance, I elected to buy a separate policy, very pleased I did, she has made two claims for accidental damage with Endsleigh, painless claim process, paid out quickly, and my no claims hasn't been affected.

With regard to car insurance, she has her own policy, with very limited mileage, for me it's worth the cost as when she finishes at Uni, she will have 4 years no claims.
