H all,

I am looking to tow a horse trailer so have been looking at the XC90's. I also looked at the Tourareg and X5 but after hearing horror stories of how expensive the running costs and repair costs are started looking at other options. My budget is 5-8k. I am new to Volvo.

Does anyone have experience in running the 2.4D5 and 2.9T6? I would prefer the petrol ideally, but not if the economy is shocking. Are the engines reliable for high milers?

Any advice welcome, thanks Martin.

if you're wanting petrol go for the V8 - not much juicier than a T6 and you may just scrape one in on you 8k budget - T6 is ok but the V8 is a much nicer engine

The T6 engine is fine but even the smallest amount of online research will tell you that the 4 speed gearbox is both crap and very unreliable. No way will you get a V8 or 3.2 I6 in budget so your only sane petrol option is the 2.5T.

All early XC90s can give you big bills so spend some time googling it. Www.volvoforums.org.uk is the UK owners club forum.

ETA - also yes, economy on the T6 is shocking. You can get 30mpg ish from the diesel. Early cars only have 163bhp odd and are very very slow. Later ones have 185bhp ish and are just very slow but less efficient. Very late cars are 205bhp and are merely slow.

I have had my T6 for six years and it's a 55 reg. my issues have been 2 wheel bearings and an alarm module. Just had the belts done and the car has covered 84k miles.

Lots of stories regarding gearboxes for the T6, but mine's been fine. It's the Exec, so very well equipped. I am in the process of looking for a replacement, either a V8 or a Range Rover. They are great cars for load-lugging, both people and luggage.

If you are still keen on the T6 after doing your research, get in touch and you could take a look at mine.

Good luck.
