I have no doubt that there has been a thread on this already but having just watched the film this week I was keen for some insight on what others thought of the film. I think I was guilty of expecting too much as it took a long time to get round to viewing, and was surprised to find it in my opinion cheesy, unrealistic and quite short.

Is this a unanimous feeling or are there still die hard fans of the film?

Unlikely. Die Hard is a totally different genre.

I think the viewing experience of the film is what makes it. If you've only seen it on a TV I don't think it will transfer very well, much like Avatar. The cinema screen is the best place for films where the budget was spent on the look and effects.

I watched it in Imax 3D, we might have had a different viewing experience smile

As has been said, its a visual movie rather than a story-based one. I saw it in the cinema in 3D and it was incredible, but watching it on my TV in normal format it was still impressive but it lost what really made it stand out.

I think it is a visual feast - watch with lights off on a large screen with the surround sound on full.

As I suspected then it seems more a special effects orientated film. Thanks for the replies.

I watched it on a TV. I actually enjoyed it. Yes, there are some scientifically inaccurate bits and some plot implausibility to it but I wasn't expecting a 100% accurate depiction of being in orbit. No Hollywood film has ever managed that.

I really enjoyed it, firstly in terms of the visual effects and the sense of immersion but also for the various metaphors employed.

Watched this at the weekend, I thought it was great, not too long and didn't need to think too much. As someone said it's a very 'lights off surround up' job, recommended!

I enjoyed it. Played on a decent tv, via bluray and on a thumping sound system.

I also suspect it would be even better on a decent cinema screen.

I think in terms of storyline and build up, Apollo 13 did a very good job. However that was based on a true story which perhaps meant I related to it a lot better, as I love factual things.

I wasn't that impressed with Gravity. Visually, it was stunning I agree, but the rest.... not a great film imo.

Over rated boring film no idea why people fawn over whatsher face and colony was like a comedy relief joke character.

Looked very good though.

It's like an adult version of that kids film avatar. Everybody seems to have been swayed by looks rather than content.

Me and the wife watched it on TV and thought it was ok, but not worthy of all the praise it got, but then I got a projector and 106" screen and watched it on 3D and both of us loved it even though it was our 2nd viewing. It really was SO much better on a big screen and while I don't really like 3D films much, this was made for it. Visually very impressive, but could have done without George Clooney's cheesy character / one-liners....

I'm not sure how an astronaut vanishing into his death in deep space was able to come up with the one liner's he did with a grimace on his face. This was one of many issues I had with the film. It just was not as would be expected if it were to be translated into a realistic scenario.
