I'm not sure if it's just me, but there seems to be quite a big increase in the number of first time posters asking quite technical questions on Pistonheads. Is PH becoming famous on the internet for it's free advice?

Maybe I'm a grump, but in such circumstances I tend not to offer a view - it's a community where you should get out what you put in and I suspect once the newbie get's their answer they'll never been seen again. I dread to think what Breadvan's total fee would be for the free advice he's given on here over the years.

If you don't like giving advice for free then don't post.

That'll be £100 please. Cash/cheque/several nights with your wife are all accepted forms of payment

Wow, I didn't realise everyone would take it quite so seriously, it certainly wasn't meant to be a serious suggestion.

I suspect there would be some very large rebates flying around if that were the case, judging by some peoples posting history.

technically speaking, if you got advice on here about property (say) from someone you knew to be a chartered surveyor on here, and it turned out to be wrong...you would be entitled to recompense of some description.

A court would be of the opinion that if you knew them to be in a position to offer advice (especially if they are a member of ACCA or RICS or equivalent for their field) that there is an implicit duty of care on behalf of the advice giver.

The 'informal' aspect of it is based purely on trust that the advised will not sue if the advice is crock....

How much should one charge for a deliberately facetious answer?

Exactly. That would only make sense if you weren't on 'pay per post' with the nice cheque each month.

Considering 99.9% of replies on PH are unresearched, unqualified opinion rather than fact I think trading standards might have something to say about it.

No way!

One of the things I love about Pistonheads is that there are hundreds, if not thousands of people who are experts in their field and they are willing to help total strangers.

OP, judging by your contributions on PHs so far I wouldn't flatter yourself by suggesting people should pay for them.
