BBC News Article

Seriously flawed logic here, a more powerful vacuum cleaner does the job more quickly, so won't be running for as long. Is there anything in our day-to-day lives that the EU doesn't want to meddle with? Thankfully I have a 2200 watt Miele with 9 years of warranty left, so I can give Brussels the finger well into the next decade.

Jesus h christ its for real yikes I was expecting a daily mash or newsthump link.

its not the wattage that's important but more the efficiency of the motor / design

I might start up a new business chipping hoovers. '20% increase in motor torque and no drop in efficiency!'

Yep, forget disposable bling cleaners such as Dyson etc. Get a Henry - it'll last forever. Far more green than buying new crap every few years!

I hope they don't start looking at our ovens and thinking there's room for regulations there too. Imagine having to come home and wait for 2 hours for your 600 watt oven to cook the tea. You won't like me when I'm hungry!

I always recommend our Sebo upright, we have had our for over 10 years on recommendation, its the one the hotels use and built to last.

How does this affect Numatic and their higher power cleaners like the WVD570?

I assume that commercial products are exempt? We use these a lot at work!

In rc cars the switch to brushless motors made a vast difference to efficiency and power. Maybe vacuum cleaners and all home appliances will follow suit.

Maybe the engineers will need to start making the things more efficient at turning motor power in to suction rather than just chucking in a bigger motor.
I don't think it's just my Hitachi (2100W) which has a variable power control. It's very efficient and bagless. Most of the time I leave it at 50%, unless I want a bit more juice then I turn it up. Now the point is, I make that decision, not some meddling twunt from Brussels.

Some fag paper calculations, say there are 375 million (one for each house hold and 0.5 again for each business) vacuum cleaners in the EU. With 20% being above 2KW so you have a total of 75million cleaners using at least 400w less.

Assume each cleaner is used for an average of 2 hours a week so 104 hours a year, each affected hover saves 42kwh of electricity a year, a total of 3.15 billion kwh or energy saved. Or about the same to replace this 1600acre solar power plant

When you have populations in the hundreds of millions small changes really do make a decent sized impact.
2 hours a week? 20 minutes a month. tongue out

I'm with Krikkit on this.

It would be more sensible for the EU to outlaw OCD.

Exactly.
If it wasn't Brussels meddling it would be Westminster instead.

yes

That's different though, as it would be a meddling twunt in Westminster, and we have more of a chance of putting them out of a job than unelected meddling twunts of the EU variety.
