Really struggling to decide on what to do this year and time is running out.

2 weeks off booked from 15/9/14

Just me and the wife. (Dog will have to go in kennels frown )

We can't just do the sitting on beaches thing and I hate cities and crowds.

I love driving but have never driven from UK although have driven hire cars abroad sevral times.

Tempted to do a driving abroad holiday but we always end up arguing if SWMBO navigates and she won't drive abroad.

Thought about cruises but not sure they are for me. They are too organised (arrive this time, leave that time etc whne I prefer things a little more easy going on hols) and I'd probably end up not straying far from the ship when in port for far of being left behind if we're not back in time.

So, some ideas to get some sun on our backs somewhere where we can mix it up a bit between ralxing but not ending up bored.

How about a driving holiday but with TomTom navigating instead of the wife? biggrin

What about hiring a campervan to give you the freedom you love.

Does it have to be sunny? We hired a car and spent a week driving round Iceland a bit later in the year than you're looking at, climate was similar to uk but scenery was stunning and a lot of the roads are unmade tracks so you can indulge in your keilder forest rally stage fantasies smile

If you want to go further south the Alpine passes should all still be open at that time of year, lovely driving and scenery through the alps and then spend a day or two at Lake Como or similar.

If it doesn't have to be sunny, then flying into Boston, hiring a car and driving through Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont should be pretty spectacular at that time of year. We did this in mid-October a few years back and the northern parts of the states were losing their colour, so I reckon you'd be in for a treat in September.

A couple at work drove down to Croatia via Italy, sounded really nice.

Thanks for the ideas so far but:

The idea of driving around in a campervan and then having to cook and live in it etc doesn't really appeal.

We did Iceland about 10 years ago and although the scenery is spectacular its very samey. We met 2 German girls who had booked a 2 week holiday there. They'd only been there a week and were bored to tears having driven around the country.

We did Northern US/Canada in the fall a couple of years ago.

I fancy driving down to Italy in the TVR but SWMBO doesn't particularly like being in the Tiv. frown

You mean she flies and I travel by train.

That COULD work - might give her time in one of the cities but I suspoect she wouldn't want to go alone. Equally the drive alone wouldn't be the same.

Hire a car / campervan and drive from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi.

You will have an amazing time and take in a diverse and breathtaking country

That might be a little too far outside my comfort zone and WAY out of SWMBO's

Go for it! Comfort zones are there to be pushed!

She'll love Hoi An / Da Lat

There's a few companies that hire out F650s, Tiger 800's and the like, not cheap but compared to the cost of riding to Denmark and getting the ferry...
