best "fast" estate?
Discussion
I think you've nailed it in one, but think you need a slush fund for maintenance.
Subaru Impreza wagon must also rank pretty highly I'd imagine.
I'm a sucker for Swedish estates though, whilst well down on power you might find a V70R more liveable with day-to-day. Or a 9-5 Aero for that matter. Both would get annihilated by an RS6 though IMHO...

An RS6 isn't really 'fun'. Fast as fk but not fun. Likewise a lot of cars on the list above. Probably an Impreza wagon is the most fun I can think of.
That said I do have a soft spot for RS Audis

If you look on the specialist forums you can pick up a very sorted RS6 for around the 10K mark that the previous owner has spent a lot of money on.
I have one with Bilstein suspension and an MRC stage 1
map taking it to 500bhp.
It drives my 3 teenagers and the missus to the Alps every year
and is the missus's car for the rest of the year.
It still feels quicker off the line than my 997 Turbo and handles like its on rails with the Bilsteins.

335i touring?
Mine was mapped, and was quicker than my M3 CSL on the road 95% of times. With a simple map I was getting 4.6 seconds to 60mph on a good run and 4.8 seconds without even trying.
Pretty good all round car as well to be fair, just coming from the M3 it was a bit bland, but no where near as awful as the S4 avant I bought before the 335i.
I tried an RS6 and it was good in its own way, but a few people I knew with them said although they were very quick they though the 335i might be a better choice long term for me. But I quite liked it.
I ended up selling the 335i and buying another M3 and a 3.2fsi Quattro A6 Avant which was a great combo. Having had that series A6 I think I would consider an S6 V10. At the time I did try one but didn't find it that quick and the consumption was woeful, but looking back it now seems like it could be a good all round car at the current prices.
BMW 535D touring.
In the real world probably not much slower than an M5. Epic torque for mid range overtakes, and to cap it all, acceptable fuel economy.
A mate of mine has the saloon version, and says the torque feels as if it could stop the world spinning !!
Obviously no good on the track
