Just wondering if anyone has any tips installing a dashcam in a 991?

I'm installing a Transcend DrivePro 200 and it should be connected to a power source that is only live when the engine is running. There seems to be a plethora of connectivity in the 991: cigarette lighter and USB connections in both the glovebox and the centre armrest. Does anybody know if any of these are only live when the engine is on?

Hi Andy do you have the car?

Get a USB lead for your phone plug it in without ignition if it charges it's live all the time. If not then it's ok.

Very easy to determine I they are live or not.

Head over to the dash cam thread for advice on fitting.

Or, get power socket adapter with USB output and illuminated USB socket 'frame' When power is available at the USB output that end of the device is lit - helps tell which sockets are powered under what conditions.

The power sockets go live at door opening, and turn off around 5 mins after doors are locked. It turns off on battery voltage to save the battery.
I've got a road angel permanently pluged into one and a radar detector plugged into one port. Both sources behave the same from a power point of view

New electronics platform on 9x1 and 92A/970/958 uses battery management; a system of switched term 30. controlled by the Power Distributer and the Gateway ECU's. ' Ignition live' an outmoded concept nowadays!!

The power sockets are monitored and switched off when the battery charge reaches a set threshold and are able to stay on if for instance a trickle charger is connected to maintain the battery.

You'll be fine leaving the power socket connected

If im understanding you . The socket will stay live until the battery reaches a threshold and cuts off the power.

Camera wise this may not be a good idea as it will continue recording thus overwriting any data

Sorry not au fait with dashcam stuff - I assume the unit is auto ON/OFF then not switched by the user? Either install a switched 12v connector into the provided outlet or you could have it hardwired into one of the fuseboxes - bear in mind anything hardwired may void your Warranty in the event of a claim wink

Yes they usually turn on with the ignition record in segments and when the memory card is full the overwrite from the beginning but they can be configured not to well mine can. You would have to remember to turn it off and on if nit set to auto.

I'm sure there will be ways around it. Or just remember to turn on/ off or lock any files needed. May not be possible after an accident if course.

Add a circuit could be used if there is an easy access fuse box. Nothing permanent removed in seconds best option IMO.just done it myself.
