as far as we are concerned our own sun producing a flare of sufficient magnitude WILL
put us back to gas lamps and horse n cart days. one day.

a nearby star WILL go supernova one day and the gamma ray burst may
be strong enough to effectively wipe out all life on earth.

the issue here though is actually there is not much the planet needs to worry about
short of a very large impactor happening by until our sun goes red giant.
