My 6 year old female Lab has just started to howl when she's in the garden in the morning, I figured this could be down to her being in season ,she has never done this before.

I Googled for an answer but only came up with the male dogs howling after a female in season locally.

Looking for more answers I dug deeper and could only find that a dog howls if it's unhappy or upset, she's not as far as I can tell.
Any light on this ,have you had similar?

I assume this is completely out of character for her. Is she behaving completely normally otherwise. Hormones may play a part in the behaviour. Could something have freaked her out in the garden.

If this is to do with her being in season it may be time to consider spaying her after this season, she is starting to approach the age of potential issues relating to being entire, however sudden unexplained howling isn't usually one of them!

My wife doesn't want her sprayed , but as you said age related issues it maybe better in the long run.

There's nothing in the garden to upset her ,as I said she did a howl yesterday and today but still seems happy.

Spaying is a decision only you guys can make, as long as pro's and cons are understood that's what counts (though I wouldn't wish the risk of a pyo on any dog!)

It's a bit odd but there must be a trigger for such an apparently random act. A new noise maybe. Something as random as a neighbour installing an ultrasound cat deterrent that kind of thing!

MY mrs' male lab howls at the ice cream man. As above maybe a certain noise is triggering it?
