I'm on O2 PAYG and only use data via wifi as I'm mean. SWMBO has an iPhone4 with a giffgaff sim also totally PAYG as she's not a great data user outside our wifi range (auto top up when balance drops to £3). Received an email from GG yesterday.

The beauty of giffgaff is you can get any goody bag you wish, when, for example your 7.5p goody bag runs out you could go for a 20 one or whatever, you can also not renew and still use any credit you have and still have another 2 months of free text and calls to other GG numbers. So yes it maybe on a par with some sim only contracts but its much more flexible.
As an example my current goody bag expires tomorrow but I'm off to Spain for a week tomorrow morning and won't need my phone, so I'll just get the next one when I get back.

The goody bag lasts for a month and you can't get another one until it ends. If you run out of data you have to pay from any airtime credit you have, you do get a special price of 2p per MB until your goody bag expires, normally 20p per MB if you have no goody bag active.

giffgaff are changing the rules. If you run out of mins or data you will be able to by a new goodybag before the original expires

It has exactly the same coverage as O2, you can check their website for the actual coverage (including 3G/4G and indoors) to see if they cover you, but the map will look the same as O2s.
They've jacked up the prices of the more expensive goody bags (well will be mid next month), which was a concern, but I think some people were taking the piss with unlimited data which is the reason for it. The only downfall I see is when you're on an unlimited data plan, it doesn't say how much you're using (when the data is limited it says how much remaining/used) so it's difficult to judge if buying a full unlimited goody bag is worth it or not. I'm going to have to trial and error the new data allowances to check myself unless I can find the info on my phone somewhere.

Just a word of warning for anyone contemplating a shift to Giffgaff. I just started on a giffgaff deal which I thought was rather good = £12 per month which inlcuded 3BG of 3G internet.
In all reality I do not know how it would be possible to use this much as the speeds are appalling. I also have an O2 PAYG sim; I did back to back tests, 5 on each network this morning and the average O2 PAYG speeds are 4 x those from giffgaff.
There's clearly a big throttling operation in progress so if you are a big data user and expecxt to be able to continue doing stuff on GG then think twice.

Never had a problem with the 3g speed on my phone. I'm on the same goodybag and using data throughout the day. No difference compared to EE previously. In all reality I do not know how it would be possible to use this much as the speeds are appalling. My son has a 5S and the network is fine on Giff Gaff. I think on my next upgrade I'll buy the phone outright and just use the goodybags. Life is so much easier with them. He's on a £10 deal which auto renews so I don't have to worry about it but then if I need to up, down or cancel it, no problem. Their app is pretty good too. Very simple to see my sons useage on data, calls and texts each month. So much easier than my dealings with EE.
