May have sold my car and so in the market for x5 3.0sd
Having come from a 535d, thought long and hard and I don't think I would like a 3.0d especially as the x5 is heavier

These still command a premium with a half decent spec

The budget is limited, so before someone mentions about facelift, 8 speed, 40d etc. I just won't be able to stretch to that

How much would you pay for say a late 07 early 08, 100k example?

We bought the pre facelift e70 3.0d on an 07 plate 6 months ago for £16k from a BMW dealer with 50k miles

So assuming you add on a premium of about £1k for a dealer then I'd reckon £19k or so maybe?

There's an 08 plate pre-Lci at our local garage with 75k for £15999 it's a bit tatty...

The main factor that means I agree about a facelift one is the ponderous gearbox rather than power. Ours moves along perfectly well for a car of its size and weight but the gearbox is so dim witted it's untrue...

I'd budget £20k to be safe?

Thanks

Budget is lower than that
Have noticed some below that too

There was a private one with less mileage good spec and sold for £18k
http://m.ebay.com/itm?itemId=161391817487

What do you meant the gearbox is dim
I've got the same gearbox in the e60 535d and its ace?
Unless obviously the weight of car makes it harder work

I owned an E70 3.0d, One of the First from 2007 for 7 years. I tried a 4.0d when they came out and while quieter there wasn't a great performance step. For most of the time there's more than enough oomph. Saying that i just upgraded coz I wanted too smile

Test drive one is the obvious answer.

Out of interest what was your average mpg in both cars?

We have an 09 3.0Sd.

Only thing i don't like is the gearbox, which as mentioned is pondorous.

can do 30mpg on a run, average on ours is around 22mpg but it does lots of short town trips.

The 3.0d is much more econimical!

In the 3.0D average was 27mpg, on a run it was 30 +. I never ran the 4.0d, only a test drive.

Honestly if you drive any dsg box car or the newer 8 speed box you'll realise just how ponderous these boxes are.

We only get mid to low 20's mpg wise too due to lots of short trips.

All things considered it is still a great great car (although I've called upon the warranty more times than i would have liked...

I have an E70 3.0sd - one of the earliest. Owned it from new, now has around 65k miles. Only real issues have been with the adaptive drive suspension. All covered under BMW warranty.
Gets an average 25mpg. More on long trips. Auto box is fine, but not "sports". Turbo lag is minimal in the sd.
Road tax is lower on all 2008 model year onwards diesel X5s including all the "sd" cars.

MPG is 22-27mpg average on these with the odd extreme exception.

What do you get from your 535d sport touring?

If you average 32 in that expect 22 in the X5, if you average 40 in that expect 27mpg from the X5.

I don't understand why the feeling on ponderous gearbox

I've had a dsg before and yes it was slick but the LCI 535d is pretty good on the gearbox, no real complaints

Average in 535d really depending on types of runs
Let's say I get a mix mid 30.

So you will get the same crap autobox, worse mpg, less perfomance and a worse handling car for just a few £k outlay. Awesome.

I bought my SD new in 2007 and still have it...the auto box is one of those things that people notice because they have read about it. Nobody complained about the box when the car first came out. Yes the 8 speed is better but the 6 speed is not "bad" per se.

It's been a great car, very reliable and extremely comfortable (Comfort Seats are superb) and just brilliant as a family wagon capable of everything from day trips loaded with bikes/dogs to ski holidays in Europe.

I might have upgraded to a newer car but I specced it as a "keeper" when I bought it and went overboard on the options so unlikely to find a car as well specced. The auto box is good but not good enough in my case to justify the extra money.

Fuel economy is as others have said 22-27mpg....to see 30 mpg in mine I'd have to drive between 50 and 70 mph....go over 70 and the consumption comes down fairly quickly (apparently!).

Ride can be fidgety on the 20" with RFT's but the latest generation of RFT's is much better than when I first had the car. When I first got the car I put normal tyres on at the first opportunity and had been running those until about a month ago....SWMBO punctured one of the rears on at 3pm on a Friday afternoon with us going on holiday the next morning. Only tyres you can buy at short notice are RFT's and they are fking expensive to buy when you can't negotiate.....two new 20" rear's Mr Kwikfit ? That'll be £900 sir.

Yeah shame lol
Although more space would be handy on the 7 seat option, of friends and grandparents on short trips
Sacrifice willing to take when the other car is still a bit more spirited

Interesting to hear of your options list and definite choice items if doing it again

Have you considered remap?

I've thought about a remap but no more than that.....I understand you can get gains in MPG as well as power. One of the reasons I haven't is because I still have the manufacturers warranty.....I know people like DMS say they will cover anything outside the BMW warranty but not sure I'd really want to get involved in that negotiation!

In terms of spec I really rate the following

Comfort Seats - Superb and used every single minute you're in the car
Reversing Camera - Live in London....really helps place the car for parallel parking too
Seven Seats - young kids...don't use them often but when I do they've been invaluable
Panoramic Roof - fairly obvious
Comfort Access - Young kids so always got my hands full
Bluetooth - Fairly obvious

Those are all "must have's" for me....Comfort Seats are very hard to find AUC and finding them in combo with the rest almost impossible.

Have things like heated steering wheel, side blinds, sun protection glass, folding mirrors (must in London), heated seats etc are all great to have.

I went from an LCI 535d to a new e70 3.0d SE in Nov 07 with dynamic pack, 7 seats, reverse cam, xenons, etc.

Was getting high 30's in the 535d - maybe 38mpg. Got 28mpg in the x5.

I fitted a tuning box to mine and it gave it a very significant power boost for not a whole pile. You could remap a 3.0d rather than go for an SD.

I'd no issues with the gearbox - loved it in fact. Not sure where these slow witted comments are coming from.

Loved mine to bits but the economy put me off mine very quickly. I changed job roles a month after i got mine and ended up putting £500 a month of fuel through it. PLUS tyres were £250 a corner so i was budgeting £1000 a year for tyres too.

I would be wary of a high miles car. These are cars with BIG running costs. High miles is only likely to increase that.

I would much rather be in a later 245bhp 3.0d facelfit than a pre facelift 3.0sd.

And there is not much in it price wise.

These seem to loose a big chunk in the first 3-4 years and then bugger all over the next 3-4 years.

2010 3.0d for £20k, so lost £30,000 and then a 56 plate will still cost you £15k.

Seems to me the sensible option is buy a 10 plate and run it for 3 years.
