Recently bought a new TV & although the picture is brilliant I can't say the same for the sound.
So I tried a Bose Cinemate (the £1300 one) although it sounded better than the TV I wasn't blown away & couldn't justify the cost.
Maybe its an age thing the wife & I are late 50's so maybe we can't hear the "amazing sound quality" the Bose salesman talked about.
After a three week trial I returned it to the store.
I really don't want wires all over the room so I guess a sound bar is the way to go.
Im looking for an improvement on the TV's sound that represents value for money.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you thought the SONOS sound bar and wireless bass speaker. heard it at a friend's recently and it seemed pretty good.

You might think of one with an equaliser - many people in their 50s are starting to lose mid/high frequencies which can make speech hard to distinguish. Boosting the 4k levels can help I'm told - but please check this independently, I'm no expert.

One of these may fit the bill http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/products/speakers/mi...

Regarding hearing, you might want to try this test which allows you the check the limit of your high frequency range. http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2009/03/can-you-hear-t... . The test is best carried out with headphones.

The graph in this link explains age related hearing in more detail. http://ispub.com/IJORL/10/2/4039

The BMR drivers used in the Cambridge product produce high frequencies differently to most speakers. HF energy is very even throughout the listening room whereas conventional speakers only produce full high frequency power when measured directly in front of the speaker.

FWIW: High street hearing centres will give you a free hearing test.

Though I'm aware that all tho OP complained about was the sound of his TV. That PH for you wink

Thanks for the replies folks.
I'll have to do more research on the products mentioned.
I wouldn't say our hearing was any worse than that of someone else in our age group sorry if my original post was misleading.
The Bose Cinemate did make a difference to the TV speakers just not the BIG difference I expected for £1300.
I originally thought about Bose because I have a Bose set up in my car (Audi) & have been very impressed with it.

Bose is more about style and marketing than quality sound.

Philips Fidelo soundbar is staggeringly good and with the detachable speakers it offers a great solution to poor TV sound.
