A video definitely needs uploading, when everything is back in working order.
Go Pro on the sled...
I don't mind pitching up with my quadcopter/gopro set up for some aerial shots.

Hi All

A quick update on progress with the funicular. I've uploaded some photos too (https://flickr.com/photos/127288954@N08/sets/72157646547042104).

The track is now repaired with sleepers bolted in place to replace the rotting old ones. The track has been jet washed to within an inch of its life and is now free of years of dirt and weeds.

The motor has been rewound and we are just working out how the circuit board hooks up to the motor. There are various timer switches that need working out. Mark is in charge of this part of the project and we are making good progress.

A new handrail has been erected and the engine room is being tarted up. The hardware - gearbox etc - will start going back in shortly. 125m of roller chain will follow. The mechanical stuff is Phik's territory and you'll have seen his post from a couple of weeks ago. Since then the carriage has been built and other bits and pieces fabricated and painted.

Next steps will be to pull it all together. New electrical component are on order and it won't be long before we are testing everything. It's a shining example of what three men with varying skills - some more helpful than others (you can guess where I fit) - can do with a bit of hard work, imagination and resourcefulness.

The aim is to have it up and running by Christmas mainly because I've told my son that the railway is how Santa will deliver his presents.

I'll keep you posted.

Oli

It's certainly starting to take shape and to me at least it's appears to be a much bigger project than I first realised looking your initial photos. I love the idea of Santa riding up with a sack full of kid's presents. biggrin

What's the impellor for on the far right of the motor and is that a brake to the left of the Impellor?

The Impeller is actually the cooling fan, there is a metal cover that goes over that and the brake to the left of the impeller. The brake is electric and is released via the control panel fractions of a second before the up or down voltage is applied.

The whole system is incredibly well thought out with plenty of electrical failsafes operated by the same panel, a wiring diagram would of come in handy as it was all disconnected with no real indication of what goes where!!

Brilliant setup! Just the fan looked a little industrial to look like it moved Air. What is the RPM for the motor given the gearing?

Induction motors like this usually turn at ~1500 rpm if 4 pole or ~3000 if 2 pole; you can get slower ones with more poles, but they are fairly uncommon.

I remember a big 'thing' about it on here (was sometime before I actually joined) but no idea what happened with that! I gather from some snide posts I've seen that it did not end well?

Whereas this is looking far more promising. Hoping for a 'first person view' video of this when its in operation smile
