The 1M has as much chance of being a future classic as 1Direction being a liked to The Beatles.
It's a great car but has no more chance of being ever seen as a classic as any other current M.
Of those 2 listed, it would be the 355 without a doubt as it is & will remain a true Classic for many years to come

I'm thinking the same! A turbocharged F355?! I'm almost certain that wasn't a factory option! perhaps the one you've seen has been modified?
The 1M being built in 'limited' numbers will have 'some' level of desirability in the future, but as mentioned above, it'll most likely not hit E30 M3 kinds of levels. In 10 years time, the prices will most likely have softened on the 1M but perhaps not overly so.
In comparison to what has been previously regarded as one of Ferrari's best cars of recent times, then the F355 wins in this respect.
I remember seeing some listed on the old Exchange & Mart magazine (remember that!) and on Auto Trader say around 2002/3 at around £27995 for the cheapest example which was usually also left hand drive. I seem to recall UK spec RHD were cheapest at around £32K. A quick look on Auto Trader (and I'm sure on PH and other high end car selling sites) shows you the levels they're going for now!
If you've got the money and can maintain the Ferrari well and keep the miles low over time, this is the car to go for in terms of potential future financial return!

what turbo 355 indeed - no idea where that came from
I heard 450 1m cars for the uk, cant be a bad punt for every day usability. Got to be better of than any other modern M car that will be <20k soon ?
perhaps its unfair to compare both cars. For me - the car needs to full the role of being a weekend joy rider and no track use.
I wonder, is a daily driver car over done?

- the Ferrari's aren't known for reliability and are known for being incredibly expensive. Do you know what an engine rebuild costs? How many miles it would do before rebuild?
If you know the above and have the cash in reserve go for it!
Worth considering is that the f355 isn't very fast compared to modern cars (if that bothers you).

Looking for a 2nd car that potentially could increase in value / stay the same - a clever buy on a porsche could indeed be the best way to go but a r8 ? nah dont think so

Maybe I'm just a shallow git but I would own the F355 for the sound + looks alone. You can get plenty of german cars which deliver performance with reliability for a fraction of the 1M cost but the F355 is just drool worthy on many levels.
It's not easy to find a good F355 these days, the few good ones that are about sell very quickly. I went to see a few and only one of the 5 cars I saw was ready to go, all the others needed work from mechanical to paint work.

The R8 hasn't depreciated at all in the last 2 years. I was looking at buying one 2 years ago and the private / retail prices then & now are identical, plus it's running costs are going to be manageable and predictable. something about the 1m just gives me a feeling its going to hold value, anyone else get this ?

Can you afford to run the rar? 6,000 mile / annual services on a 20 year old car. All the cars that I have owned once they pass about 6-7 years old seem to need odd bits doing. V expensive on the rar.

I've driven both. I didn't even want to drive the 1M but Sytner Leicester had one which the guy was so enthusiastic about he pretty much forced me to drive it so I could see how much better than my at the time 130i it was.
(The F355 although relatively affordable by modern Ferraris is a dream car for me mostly because I had so much access + great experiences in one growing up.)
I couldn't care less about how amazing the driving characteristics of the 1M are, relative to the F355 it looks shoddy and sounds flat. To be perfectly honest I've been looking at F355's lazily for the past year and the more I look the better the 348's look so I might have to go for an even worse driving and slower version so I can look a bit cooler with my slightly older Ferrari.

Exactly! For a year of my life I pretty much got driven around in a F355 to and from school. I can't remember about how grippy, accelerative, braking performance or anything else that might make a car a good driving car. I can remember the sound, sitting what felt like on the floor, people waving and letting us out of traffic and just feeling of being in something very special. I like BMW and own a few but there is no comparison.
