Hah thanks!

Only got about 20 shots I'm happy with out of 5000!! Took some practice with the panning!

Right folks - what type of lens do you need to get pics like that? What's the reach and spec? I'm new to this but want to get my first decent lens for LM 2015

Great pics btw!

I would start with a 300mm f4.5, Ideally a 400mm would be better but they are three times the price and if you are good with settings then crop the photo if you have to.

If you are made of money buy a 400mm F2.8.

What Camera do you have?

I'm no expert, but in previous years I have used a Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS, which is now surplus as I have just bought a Tamron VC Di USD 70-300.

The pics above were taken using a Canon 70-300mm IS.

The thing I found is that a lot of my shots are around the 250mm focal length, and I have a bit of room for cropping. Something like a 100-400 or 400 prime would probably give some better shots, but takes more practice with the panning than a short focal length ime.

Also worth considering wider angle shots as well, I always get sucked into close ups for motorsport, but have seen some lovely scenic shots from others.

It should always be noted the top and bottom ends of the lens are best avoided.

A 300mm will be great at 250mm but drop in quality at 300mm

If you expect to take shots at 300 all the time buy the 400mm

Thanks for the info.

I have a Canon D70 (crop sensor) with the 18-135 kit lens and don't know where to go from there. I don't want to buy multiple lenses (or go through multiple upgrades), so it's the kit lens for day-to-day and a bigger lens for motorsport. I'm just not sure whether to go Canon or third party, but I want to buy once and buy well if you know what I mean. I don't want to spend a stupid amount but prepared to put a fair bit in if it will last. This question is better serviced in the photography forum, but having seen your shots I was keen to know what you used as they are the kind of pics I would want to achieve.

I would go with one of these, when I had a Canon I used this lens for motorsport but now have a Nikon D300 and use Nikon Lenses.

My plan is get a 400mm but at £1k i can't afford it right now.

My pictures were taken with a Nikon 1, with the 30mm-110mm (massive crop factor) but non of my pictures were cropped after taking them as far as I can remember. My best advice (from a novice) is to put it into shutter priority mode and experiment!! took me about 30 shots before i got the right balance for the panning shots, for the shots from MB towards Porsche curves i was just in aperture priority mode with ISO 100.

for me the skill is in the panning, lots of practice and lots of changing setting and hope for the best wink

one of the easiest places to pan was from the stands nearest to the ferris wheel on the wednesday and thursday and get the cars as they were coming into the pits because that way you can pan slightly slower thus easier to catch and progress from there.

Yes - the Canon 70-300mm IS lens is a nice lens for the money. The shots above were taken with one, I borrowed it from a friend to try it out.
In the end though, I opted for a lightly used Tamron 70-300mm Di VC USD - for the following reasons, build and IQ comparable, but it has a non rotating front element, full time manual focus, and comes with lens hood. The focusing is faster and quieter on the Tamron as well. Also, lightly used it only cost me £165 which is great value imo.
The IS on the Canon has two modes, with mode 2 being for panning specifically I think. The Tamron has a single mode for IS, so will be interesting to see how the IS copes with only correcting one axis.

I also have had the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 for a while, and find it a great lens of the price. I know many would suggest sticking with Canon, but I have been more than happy with Tamron.

Another lens I thought about buying, and still might is the 70-200mm f/4 L - great build, fast AF, good IQ - only worries would be lack of reach and lack of IS.

Thanks again folks. However I thought the general rule was you needed a dirty great big white lens for motorsport that looks capable of bring down an aircraft?!

I'll start looking in to the one that has been linked (Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM)

again - great pics all!
