Just a question really - I was looking today to see if anyone puts in cost of ownership/running costs on any of the number of great cars owned by members. It seems the answer is no. I know I only did one - the others no one would care about i'm sure - and it's arguably just a big TT with A3 interior, but, how come some of you that have proper exotica don't put the details in?

(Should have done a poll but...)

Is it because you don't want people to know?
Is it because it's hard to tell because of finance to take into account?
Is it because you can't be bothered and just want to think about what's next?
Is it something else?

Sorry if this is a boring thread - my first start I think, but I was just ineterested today while day dreaming of another toy.

Thanks for reading and for replying if you do.

I don't own a supercar so forgive me for replying but......

When I owned a Lotus Excel I didn't fill in the running costs.

I couldn't be bothered but it was mainly because I didn't really want to know!

Thinking about some things in too much would kill the magic, the best things don't let you think about anything else.

Nice one - see: useful info re DB9, not a money pit and fine for families with under 12s. Good on you!

I get both the negatives so far - especially on cars kept a long time. I think I would like to bury my head in the sand and not consider this stuff - a lot of people say "if you have to ask you can't afford" rubbish but I think it's great to have real world examples. Cheers

Sorry to say it really is a case of if you have to worry about running costs don't bother buying, a bit like buying the supercar that gives the best mpg, you just wouldn't would you. The only running costs I have a handle on is insurance at £7k and road tax at about £3k, even just typing that makes me wince!

Really? I don't think your insurance and tax seems at all high for your garage, in fact I think they're quite reasonable. Good work.

That's what I'm talking about, great detailed blogs/reports of a petrolhead. This stuff is all part of the ownership and experience isn't it? Good choice in bike too, loving my STR.

No I agree, for what I've got its cheap, but it's still £10k, that's still a chunk of money!

I simply couldn't say as I've no idea, I just pay what needs to be paid as it comes along, I don't keep any tally so have no idea.

Plus if I did add it up, it'd probably put me off having them, life's too short!

Same here. I don't know what the running costs are, and I don't care.

Same here, I've started to work it out a few times and stopped when I start feeling giddy(-:
I reckon on 1500 per month for depreciation on supercars as a minimum anything less is a bonus. I try not to look at fuel consumption and road tax is just one of those things.
Insurance is a strange one, my Aventador costs less to insure than my company Audi(-:

I guess I just like reading the blog bit - and seeing what potential bills can come along if that makes sense. I'm not interested in insurance & tax - depreciation even to a certain extent. Maybe it's a bit voyeuristic - but also interesting. Cheers for replies all who have.

It always amuses me, people get hung up in "running costs" but frankly depreciation makes them pale into insignificance, yet seems to get ignored!

Depreciation is by far and away the biggest cost on any relatively new car.

On my 458 spider for instance, over the the first 3 years I reckon it'll cost about £30k a year at least, far more than service, any repairs, fuel, insurance or anything else.
