Hi - Ph advice needed please (yes have already bought sausages and hammer):

Bought used car from 200 odd miles away from home, with warranty. Small problem appeared which is defo covered by t&c of warranty. Dealer seems ok about it and is talking to his mechanics. I have given him quotes from 2 local garages to me and asked if he would like me to use anyone in particular (declined). He talks as if there is going to be a compromise of some sort..... There isn't but I want to know what he suggests.

I suspect his is going to tell me that he can get it fixed by someone he knows for £x. My quote if for 2 x £x. I either drive 400 miles to get it fixed foc by him or he will pay x to my local garage (obviously leaving me to pay diff).

Warranty says 'we undertake to contribute to the total retail cost of rectification (including parts and labour)'. no mention of own garages, distance etc (its just a signed photocopied warranty from elsewhere with some extra notes on it)

What are my rights / options ?

Is it a seperate third party warranty ? Or the dealers own product.

Most are third party and the website might list approved warranty garages, hopefully including ome closer to you. Would be slightly odd if it was a specific dealer with their own warranty.

Well - he didn't write it up. He photocopied one from somewhere else, added a few notes (such as adding air-con to the exclusions), stamped it with his garage name, filled my car details and we both signed it.

Its says 'Specific Warranty' on it and states my stat rights are unaffected.

Once again, this is the problem with buying cars from a long way away. If (when...) they go wrong, the supplying dealer naturally wants to fix it using his own means, not to pay some third-party for it.

What is the car/age/mileage, OP?

Let him fix it or pay for it yourself.

If he offers a contribution and you can't be bothered to travel up there accept it it's more than fair.

Presumably the money you saved travelling 250 miles is not sufficient to cover repair?

Did you drive 200 miles to save 100 quid on a 9 year old used car?

If it's a third party warranty you should be speaking to them, not the dealer.

If the dealer has underwritten the risk himself you need to do as he asks. I.e. Give him the opportunity to repair it.

I was in the area anyway and the car was the right one, just what I was looking for. I didn't travel to save money !
Its his warranty.
I guess my worry is that because he must be fairly confident that he isn't going to have to actually do the work, he can come up with a cost for the job that isn't based in reality - and offer that. Which ends up with me having to pay for work that is covered under the warranty.

I bought a BMW from a garage in Doncaster, it was the best example I could find in the country at the time, mechanically the car was excellent with lots being done but the paint work needed a few issues sorting. When the car was delivered to me in ramsgate I noticed the work that had been done was rubbish quality. In the end it went to Essex to one of there dealers in there chains body shop to be repaired. It took over two months for the supplying dealer to agree for the works being done. Only the threat of going to bmw uk got the managers finger out of his arse and get it sorted. Next car I buy will be local.

Why would you think that is the only reason people travel distances to buy things?
