Good job I arrived yesterday (going to be in New York for 3 weeks with work). Started snowing this morning (upto 30" predicted by tomorrow). Been advised to work from the hotel room tomorrow.

Flights have been cancelled, all leave for water company staff have been cancelled, my site visits have been cancelled for this week.

I am going for a walk later to see if I can find a snow ball fight to join in with (not seen snow for about 10 years).

I suspect that you will get very little done for more than a week; iirc it takes ages to melt in NY.

Netweather forecast for here in the Yorkshire Dales is looking interesting for the next few days. What is that conversion factor for rain to snow again!?

10 to 1 is the often quoted figure but in the UK could be lower than that.

I'd be more worried by the wind chill!

Bah, a bit of cold never hurt anyone.

I remember being in Champery a few years ago with a friend for a boys skiing weekend. It was -32 with the wind chill making it feel like around -45. The moisture in the air froze instantly so that everywhere you looked you saw tiny diamond flickers - it was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. It was also one of the very few times I've needed to wear full thermals under my ski kit, a pair of under-gloves and a balaclava.

We were in a (then) brand new Range Rover TDV8 which Land Rover had given us to use. It had the full arctic kit on it to pre warm the fuel etc. Was superb to hoon around in as virtually every other car in town wouldn't start. At one point it got so cold that they closed the lifts because they couldn't allow their people to be out in the storm. We did some skiing behind the Rangie attached to a rope and then just fked it off and went and got sttered in some bar.

East Anglia looks like the place not to be. South should get some snow showers at night but daytime temps seem more favourable for rain.

Best place remains elevated hills on the western side of UK in the north. Even Exmoor/Mendips/Quantocks should enjoy some lying snow.
