2 For 1 Offers
Discussion
Am I alone in getting peed off over these? I just went into Boots to buy some antihistamines as I was feeling a bit sniffy. Apparently if I buy 2 boxes I get the second box half price.
I wanted to buy a shirt in a shop in town a few weeks but I only wanted 1 not 2.
In both cases I left the shop without making a purchase.

Don't care on clothes etc but it's a nuisance in the supermarket since it always seems to be applied to items with short lifespans. Hence I am often chucking away ham etc since I can't get through it in time, but it feels like you are being cheated if you leave it on the shelf despite it being BOGOF.
Edit: I am talking about true 2 for 1 offers, not buy one get one half price

Second for half price isn't 2 for 1, it's 50% off second item if you choose to buy another. Don't really see the issue.
I only see the issue in that it would have been better to sell the first product at 25% off the rrp and the second. Same saving if you need 2 but most of us who only need one...It is for this reason that I have enough shirts in their packet to last me most of the rest of my suit and boot career and at least twice a year find I am out of BO bash as the last one I picked up was really truly the last one, and not just one of the 6 I bought a few months back...
"I went clothes shopping today at the K-Mart. I think when I say K-Mart we're all hip to the fact that I'm talking style central. I picked up a couple of short sleeve suits . . . a little Century 21 blazer for the holidays, you know. The thing I hate about these cheap clothing stores is they have these two-for-one sales. Hey folks, two of st is st! If they really want to fk you they'll give you three of these things. Yeah, that's all I need is three lime-green leisure suits, with lapels shaped like a fking hang glider." — Dennis Miller
I can also feel short changed on these offers. BOGOHP on something I don't really need 2 of (shirt is a good example) I'd feel short changed because "my" single shirt costs double the second shirt. More annoying when it's a distress purchase.
Sometimes it works, eg on food (with a long life) eg where a coffee is £3.50 but you can buy 2 for £6 for example. I know it'll be used.
On short lifespan items check the price per gram though, if there's cheese on a BOGOF or 2for offer that single pack is probably over-priced and the 2for offer brings it more into line with the price per gram of other products.
There also tends to be a single pack promotion on something similar at the same time too so you don't lose out.

I always feel short changed because imo if they can make such an offer the first item is clearly over priced.
Unfortunately these offers are all too often supplier-funded rather than being funded from the supermarket's profit.Often with the supplier having little choice in the matter, too.

Just buy one then, you complete weirdo. You're still buying the thing you went to buy for the price you would have paid for it.I wanted to buy a shirt in a shop in town a few weeks but I only wanted 1 not 2.

Ridiculous

I left Boots without buying anything and got my antihistamines from a small local chemist.
That's not how it works. The second item costs less because its an extra promotional sale for the supplier. The supplier has already paid for the fixed assets to make the product, and the marketing. The only extra cost to them is the labour (its an oversimplifcation but you get the idea)I left Boots without buying anything and got my antihistamines from a small local chemist.
They hope people that normally buy cheaper stuff will use their BOGOF offer, and will switch permanently.
Its unlikely they could sell at a lower cost based on normal sales volumes.
To get wound up by promotional offers seems odd to me. I just take advantage of them if I need stuff, or just buy one if that's all I want.
It's perspective; i.e. They are penalising those who just want to buy one, rather than giving bulk buyers a discount.
I agree with the OP. They should just make the thing cheaper in the first place; by doing BOGOF/2nd item discount, they are blatantly advertising the fact they can afford to drop the price greatly if they wanted, but no.

But they aren't penalising anyone. I don't understand your problem, just buy the one you wanted for the price it costs anyway.I agree with the OP. What an odd mindset.

Such discounts are frequently on the massively overpriced, but popular goods too. Things like Pringles, baby wipes, Coca-Cola etc. You just need to wait for the discount to come around again...
You also need to know your prices as a "deal" in some stores can still be more expensive than the normal price in other stores...Gassing Station | News, Politics & Economics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
