Anything to look out for?
Which and why?

Personally think bmw do a cracking 3.0d

Drove a e39 old version and was good

Personally wouldn't want a low end petrol in a big car

They're not really alike, one's a workhorse, the other is a very nice car. I had a 7 series V8, currently have a 530d estate.

Running costs, the 7 was around 21 mpg, the 530 is around 34 mpg. To be fair, apart from that all other costs are quite similar.

One will take all sorts of ste in it and on the roof, the other, well you just wouldn't.

530i is a far nicer option than the 530d imho.

530i 231bhp and 0-60 in 7.1 seconds. Genuine 27mpg average.
530d 218bhp and 0-60 in 7.1 seconds. Genuine 32mpg average if you're lucky on the earlier diesels.

The 530i is bullet proof as well, so could be a much cheaper ownership experience when you are getting to 8-10 year old cars.

530i in the 7?
I guess the estate is twice the luggage space than the 7?

No, not that much in it, but the touring can get some weirder shaped objects in of course.

I had a 528i touring (E39) and a 728i (E38).

IMO - the 728 is the better car to live with 95% of the time. It's got a gargantuan boot and even at christmas the six foot tree would fit in the cabin with the electric seat right back. Not fast but quick enough. Reasonably fuel efficient - not far off 30 anyway and SILENT inside at 80mph on the motorway.

The 528i? Nice enough car but not as quiet, well built or in my experience at least as reliable. The 5s also seem to get a lot of water ingress problem that I never experience with the 7.

Still miss the old girl.

And to add - overall I would say very similar running costs. For the E3X generation. Wouldn't touch the E6x generation diesels for that money. Petrol all the way.

No, that is taking it easy.

I had a 750i for 2 weeks when the 730d was having a new iDrive fitted and it would often show 12mpg on the commute.

They are massive, heavy cars, and when you combine that with a 4.8 litre V8 you are not going to get excellent economy.

Our 730d only saw 32mpg over 2 years and 58k miles and would often be down to 24mpg on the commute.

The rear bulkhead is fixed in the 7, if you need to fold the seats you need the tourer or someone Who took the option for a split seat on the 5 saloon.

Must be about right - my 550i would av about 15mpg in a slow, urban commute. So another couple of mpg off that would probably be right to take account of the extra weight.

I averaged 22mpg overall with never more than 30mpg forthcoming with the N62 lump.

Spoke to one dealer about 40 minutes away. Me: hi I'm calling about the 7 series, if you still have it?
Salesman: you can come and view it, it's in our showroom, but you can't drive it.
Me: right ok, I won't bother then as I need to drive it to drive it!?
Salesman: right ok thanks
Me: cheers bye

Prick.

Like its a pricey motor, not.
