I once got 40+ on a long drive from Manchester to Glasgow. Possibly the most boring journey of my life mind.

My MK7 GTD does 40mpg even when driven enthusiastically, but I'd definitely have another MK5 GTI.

I did 38 driving to Stroud and back last week without really trying; MK6 GTI DSG on Super unleaded.

Driving economically 40 is very doable.

I've got a MK6 Golf GTi DSG running on Super Unleaded and I get 37-38 mpg on easy runs on a regular basis. When I really try I have seen 40 mpg.

Came very close for swapping it for a Mk6 2.0 TDI this month but don't think I'll bother anymore smile[url]

Difference is you are trying as hard as possible to get your 40mpg whereas my CR 170 GTD will do 45mpg all day without hanging about (as long as you arent thrashing it everywhere)

Swings and roundabouts etc etc

You don't need to try hard to get 40mpg, just drive like a normal person with the cruise control set to the speed limit. I've seen people who try to drive these economically touch 45mpg but I've never bothered myself as it's too boring. Currently my computer is saying 34.3 average from last 367 miles of mixed driving which is good enough for me.

My 45mpg is on a dual carriageway run but its full of busy and chaotic roundabouts you can't hang around on which is what kills the mpg. Also I work out tank to tank, if I go off the trip it displays 55ish (so usually ignore it completely)

That's another thing - in my 6 years with a MKV GTI it was never less than hopelessly optimistic in its MPG claims!
