I think that the total lack of excitement I feel at spotting new plates is down to:

1 - It happens every 6 months, not 12 so it's much more frequent
2 - New cars are so very, very much more common now than they were 20 years ago
3 - I'm no longer 7

I can remember it being a thing for wkers to "have" to get the latest plate, but I thought that st died with the GL/GLS/CD/CDX badges showing where you were in the pecking order of knobends?

+1 the only people I know who talk about new plates are not interested in the cars themselves

You'll be kicking yourself by the middle of next week.
heh, maybe, but as it is a lease deal it isnt my car so I'm not particularly bothered.Had I'd been buying of course I would have waited for the sake of a week.

I know it's a new car and that's good enough for me!

I have a 64-plate X5 sitting in Grimsby waiting for me to pick up on the 6th. I could have got it a couple of weeks ago but chose to wait. 'Perceived' value retention capacity and all that.

I don't think I've ever seen a new registration out on the roads earlier than this time! On the way back from Edinburgh on 12th August I saw an Arriva double-decker going down the A74M on 64 plates, with tradies as well of course.

I presume it was being delivered to a depot or something. Strange to see one so early, but I agree with the others in here saying it's just not as exciting/noteworthy any more.

Used to be fun to spot these when we were kids. Still remember an old Italian boy in my folks' street, bursting with pride as he came home with his shiny W-reg Fiat 131...

Saw my first 64s today, in my employer's yard, 6 shiny Scania 8-wheel tippers all on consecutive number plates. All being stickered up and ready to roll on Monday morning.

Saw a few Volvo truck cabs being driven through Dundee yesterday, number plates were taped up and had trade plates on.

Picked up our new van on Wednesday last week - on a 14 plate. Wasn't worth waiting for 64.

Would it not effect resale value? Surely waiting a week would see your van as more appealing/worth more if it was on a newer plate come sale time?

Makes no odds on the PCP or lease figures whether you deliver on Feb 28th/Aug 31st, Dec 31st/Jan 1st or Mar 1st/Sep 1st or a week either way. End date is still 36/48 months and X miles after day one after all.

Of course, pay outright and give a dealer a reason to knock the value a bit and you'll pay a modest penalty wink

We bought outright... generally do on vans, then lease cars.

It's amazing how many people don't buy cars/vans in August though waiting for the new reg... means you can get a bit of deal, which offsets any knock-down come trade in.

Why would the number plate number matter if you are leasing?!

I can understand if you had the choice to sell it at the end but it really makes absolutely no difference at all...

I've seen loads of 14 plates on Stobart transporters on the A249 from Sheerness Docks. Most seem to be oversupplied Euroboxes destined for hire car firms.

The storage land on Sheppey seems much more full of cars now than in recent years. VW switching imports to Sheerness recently is making a big difference.

I really don't understand the whole 'new number plate thing, collecting the car from the dealer at midnight etc
Let me explain, it the same as when the new iphone comes out.

It makes people feel better about their otherwise empty existence.

It's a marketing ploy in the same way as fashion designers have new autumn/winter collections.

The savings had at the front end are often more than the extra depreciation (as dealers don't tend to sell as much in the run up, so deals can be available)..

...probably less so now that it's twice a year though
