I keep a few of my bikes out in the shed, and there has been a spate of break ins locally lately.

I'm looking for suggestions on beefing up my shed security, more to discourage anyone from trying to get in as I'm sure they could just pull the shed apart if they were really determined.

Any good suggestions please? Alarms?

Secure the bikes as if they were outside, and treat the shed as a thing to keep the rain off. That's my tactic anyway, motorbike security chain coming up through the floor attached to concreted in anchor under the shed.

Here's quite a good site for securing most things.

Good quality padlocks, hasp and staples.
at least two.

Grill on the inside of the window, and a net curtain up at it.
is the roof bolted down what about fastening it from the inside as well.

My shed was quite flimsy so i boarded it out with decent qaulity 8x4 ply.

Get them locked up and preferably to something else like your mower or something bulky.
get some beware of the dog stickers, dummy cctv cameras

One thing ive done which has been superb, ive attached those women rape alarm things to the wheel and the sounder is hidden so as soon as they are moved the plug thing gets pulled of and the alarm sounds.
Gripper rods on your fence, and cement or fasten the panels in.
best thing to do is snoop round your own garden at night like a burglar would do.

my neighbourhood is dead quiet, but its a cut through between a ropey shopping centre and a tought estate

This is a hot topic around the club at the moment as a guy had five bikes stolen overnight on Monday frown They broke into his garage through the side door and took just the bikes, wheels and all bike related tools. wkers.

I invested in a powerful floodlight last night and a cheapo standalone battery powered Yale alarm. They do a PIV unit and also a door switch which are about £25 or so each and can be paired up. Next up a ground anchor and chains. Chain each bike not all on one loop. I may well use the outside light to switch on a floodlight inside the garage, I was recommended to do this by a local copper. Basically do all and anything! I think I will end up putting on better doors as well although I know that if someone wants something that badly they will take it, no matter what. Extending a home alarm over a wireless network is an option if you already have something installed? Lastly double check all your bikes are insured. Home policies are actually pretty good but you have to declare the values to avoid a crappy payout if the worst should happen.

Can I add this link to the stolen bikes the more publicity the better for the poor chap.

can i recommend if there are some bikes you only use e.g. on a weekly basis you (or rather not all that frequently) simply take the front wheel off and store it somewhere else (like in the house). it's obviously much harder to nick a bike you can't ride. if you use your bike daily that may not be quite so practical though! obviously it will not deter the most determined thief, but i imagine would deter most

I've explicitly *not* beefed up my garage so that it doesn't stand out. There's one 3 down with massive locks all over it. That's the one that will get broken into!

Not directly for a bike, but I've got one of these on order for my generator.

They do bike ones as well - not cheap though.

It'll be set on a large concrete pad, and the genny will have a motorbike ground anchor securing it.

I agree with Hora, I guess if you beef up security it might deter a few casual scrotes, but if anyone sees you out on your bike and then back to your house then they will come equipped. You can get through most locks/bolts/chains with £100 of tools from argos , a few Youtube videos, not "special" knowledge and a bit of brute force.

I keep mine in my conservatory with a bored terrier and collie to guard over them (well they bark very loudly when they see anything in the garden)

I went for one of these. Got power, lighting, an alarm, shelving, loads of hooks and ventilation. It's not cheap, but I don't have a garage, and this was the next best thing to having a garage built. Really pleased with it. I've got a load of bikes in it, and the double doors means access is very convenient.

Suggest whichever one you get, that you get the vented panels. I'd be concerned at bikes not drying out otherwise.

I'm not sure that's good advice.

Bike theft isn't Oceans 11 - they're not looking for the thrill of the caper. It's scumbags trawling around back gardens looking for stuff to nick in badly secured sheds. Bikes often happen to be that something.

Exposed hinges can't be a good idea with cordless angle grinders around, if the thief in prepared to make a bit of noise?
