Hi all, well were looking to buy in France a small house in a village with all the usual shops and bars restaurant's not too long a drive from the ports so Brittany comes to mind .
looking for contacts for prices of property recommendations of where to stay .

local airports and carriers from the south east of England would be an advantage

not sure which part of france to chose although a mild winter climate would be an advantage .
be grateful to hear of any experiences costs of buying process etc
cheers

Mild winter = near the coast. Our house in Sarthe(72)/Indre-et-Loire(37) border regularly sees -10 in winter. That said, for a -10 night, the next day is likely to involve t-shirts in the sun! The village is La Chartre sur le Loir - famous in these circles for its Aston Martin based bar. Quite a few expats in the area.

Tours has a daily flight from Stansted and is 55 minutes from Paris on the TGV.

Brittany will offer warmer winter temps, but cooler/wetter summers. And plenty of storms during winter too.

The Family House in the Dordogne regularly gets snow and mega minus temps in the winter. You have to go pretty far south to get a mild winter. Then you start looking at 2 days travel to drive there.

Mum & Dad have a house in Brittany and it's never snowed. But you're never guaranteed wall to wall sunshine either. It really is a climate all on it's own, and the French weather forecasters stand in front of it (and ignore it) on the television so I don't think they know what to do make of it! Beautiful spot though. We've just come back from two weeks and the most stressful thing was deciding whether to sit in the garden or on the beach. If you want big cities and a pounding night life, it's not the place to go...

Check out Flybe services into Nantes (south) and Brest (north).

How 'just'? My colleague is in the latter half of his second week there and says that it has barely stopped raining.

Sunday afternoon.
smile

Late edit: It is incredibly localised. 2 miles either way can be raining whilst you're in sunshine with blue skies.
It's always brighter at the coast than inland. If it's raining where he is it's worth going somewhere else rather than staying there waiting for it to stop.

Check out Vendeé. Just south of Brittany, coastal, mild and more sunshine hours per day than any other part of France. A day without sunshine is almost unheard of there. Easy drive from Normandy ports.

Love the place, and can never understand why it isn't screamingly popular with Brits, but it isn't.

My sister lives just the other side of Tours in Blere.

I'm passing through Blere soon. Booked into Le Cheval Blanc.
They will welcome our dog into the Hotel but not the restauant. A bit odd that. I'm hoping they will serve us dinner in the bar, if not will have to find somewhere else for a repast.

I think that may be the only hotel in blere. It's a tiny place with not much to do. At least the river has a nice walk towards chenonceau Castle. All the gardens at the castle are on the North side of the cher River, the South path takes you to the castle but no way in, nice views and walk though. Amboise is a much more vibrant place up the road with good food places. Blere seems to be a stop for some classic car tours but they don't seem to stay long.

How long is a piece of string?
Do you want to rent it out, will you honestly go there in winter,do you want rural France or near a town,do you want it in a touristic area etc....

I have lived in rural France and it's hard, the locals spoke patois to the livestock and we had 60 cm of snow every winter.
Visit out of season also as France closes down from November till May unless you are near a reasonable size town.

Thanks, actually sounds ideal for an overnighter, maybe dinner in Amboise or Loches.

Went over to St Valery sur Somme on Sunday for an easy week's break, came home today because there is only so much you can do with rain all day every day.

That's a shame for you. Sorry to hear that. It's over 600kms north-east from where we were though, so I don't think I can use our localised weather peculiarities as an excuse!

My Dad lives in Jumelles, in Maine et Loire, between Saumur and Le Mans - handy in June.
