I was in Wickes DIY yesterday buying some bits & pieces, paint, mastic sandpaper ect, took the things up to the girl on the counter, well, she had the personality of a flee, and did`nt know what please or thankyou meant ! anyway, she put the things through the checkout, and then asked me for my name & postcode, i told her that i`d only just moved in to the house and had forgotten the postcode, to which she replied, "well i cant serve you then,i need your name and adress" i was gobsmacked ! is this a requirement, are we required by law to give these guys our names and adresses ? after all we dont have to do this when we go and buy food from Sainsburys or Waitrose do we ?
Just wondered if anyone knows about this ?

Tell them to fk off! They do this in France in the hardware stores and I suppose it's just free marketing info for them.

I rattle off "12345" in a sarcastic way when asked (postcodes here are 5 numbers).

They usually ask for your address when issuing a refund - which you can refuse.
I have never heard of this when buying stuff, which I do regularly.

Just ask to speak to a Man next time.

Yeah I get this all the time. I was asked for an email address in a Levi's outlet. I told the girl that I didn't have email. She just looked at me and shrugged then continued to serve me.

It's a bit rude to ask personal details in a store, espscially if they don't actually explain why they want it. I'd just make something up on the spot if they refused to serve me without handing some information over.

I was asked my name when I went to get a cup of coffee some few weeks back.

I looked at the person serving me and said: "I am The Customer."

I regret not adding "you can call me Sir"

"Wickes - it's got your name on it"

Isn't that their slogan.

Maybe they need to change it to include "and all your other personal details too".

When im asked for a mobile number I just tell them I don't have one. You do get some odd looks but nothing they can do about it.

The correct response when being asked for your name when purchasing a coffee is "Costa"
