Looking for some advice. I sold my Nikon d5000 previously as I wasn't using it much. It wasn't very good for video (720p Resolution, No mic input etc). I want to pick up something that I can use for video whilst also photos.

Without very much research into what really makes a good all-round camera I had been looking into the following:

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera (Down to around £600 now)

Canon 5d Mk2 (Used - around £800-900 on eBay)

GoPro HD Hero 3+ (These can be purchased for around £240)

They're all very different propositions, the 5d seems to be a favorite but I'm unsure how reliable an older/used DSLR would be.

Any thoughts or suggestions on what else to take a look at? I would probably consider a budget of £1000 with a decent lens etc.

The 5D would be my choice out of the options you list as it is full frame and has HD video. If you wanted a cheaper alternative, the 7D also shoots HD video but has a cropped sensor. Secondhand would be cheaper than the 5D though.

The new Lumix FZ1000 can record 4K video and is getting good reviews although it is fixed lens (that noise you can hear is a sharp intake of breath from the regulars here smile).

These are stills taken from it's video

What types of photography/filming are you intending to do?

The GoPro is only really useful for action-type stuff. It's too limited for most other roles.

The 5D2 is great, and gets used professionally. The 7D is another good option, and is about to be replaced by a mark 2 version, so secondhand prices should fall in the not too distant future.

The 6D is another option - full frame as opposed to the 7D's 1.6x crop, and around the same price second hand as the 5D2.

If 1080 is OK then GH3. I guess a GH4 is out of budget?

For filming, there are five features that are actually really useful on a DSLR.

You want dual pixel autofocus, so the lens can use contrast and phase to lock on in Video mode.

You want HDMI, 1080p output. 30 frames is ok, 60 frames is better.

You want an lens that autofocuses smoothly and quietly, like a Canon STM lens.

You want an external microphone port as on the on camera mikes are useless.

And you want an articulating LCD.

Based on this, the 5d fails on several points, and is soundly beaten by the 70D as a movie camera.

The 6D and 7D is something I hadn't considered, I will definitely take a look.

I would love something that can do what the GoPro does (car mounted, stable video) and to use a handheld/tripod mounted for walking around etc.
