Looking to get a car in the next few weeks having not had one for a few years. It'll be used daily but the commute to work is about 10 miles all in so c 4000 miles a year so I'm not that fussed about fuel consumption. Ideally:

4 seats
Reasonably sprightly (150bhp +)
Nice Spec (Leather etc.)

So far we've been looking at Mk4 1.8T GTI and Alfa 147 Either 2 litre petrol or 1.9JTDM.

We're swaying towards the Alfa as it's a pretty little thing and is a lovely place to sit interior wise. Just wondering if there's any similar cars we're overlooking?

Jaguar S-Type V6. 240bhp, leather and plenty of space. Facelift versions have much nicer interiors and should be within your budget.

I'm biased but I'd take a Clio 182 over either of those options.

...was the one that came to my mind first.

Should have added, this will be a joint car with the missus who 'Is not at the point in her life where she wants to be driving a saloon'. This rules out the jags and BMWs although a 328 would probably be my choice. So add hatchback to that list of requirements.

Clio sport a decent shout, can a decent example of those be had at that price range?

Yes, should be able to get a good one, just make sure the cambelt & dephaser have been done & that the exhaust & rear shocks are in good nick.

Just a thought, how about a 3 series compact, you can get a 2.5 I think?

Should be able to get a pretty decent Leon Cupra for that. Much better than the Mk4 Golf 1.8T: more power, better suspension, interior from the A3.

The E36 and E46 come in rather fetching coupe styles, so definitely not ruled out.

+1

Cheap as chips. Buy one thats had the cambelt done by a specialist and you're set. Easy to work on too.

Good suggestions. The BMWs are completely off limits, Even an M3 apparently. A leon, as good a car is it is, is what her ex used to have so that's a no as well!

You'll get a decent Saab 9-5 Aero for that - 250bhp, good spec, plenty of performance, relatively low running costs

Haha, this. Or a willingness to forgo a 50% contribution to the car and everything that goes with it even though I'll be the one using it 90% of the time!

How about an MG ZR? I think the early Focus ST170's were a bit gutless from reading reviews, can you get a Fiesta ST for that money?

OP's looking at significantly smaller cars, but yes, 2K buys a very good Aero indeed. In fact, it'd buy mine, now I come to think of it, and it's not even for sale!
