I need a bit of help with a couple of issues as I’m trying to determine what’s happening with my Mk2.5.

In no particular order…

Finding first gear and then changing to second has become a bit of a nightmare over the last couple of months as the gears simply don’t seem to be in the right place. I’m finding it quite ‘notchy’ to find first and then go to second. (The clutch was changed 2 weeks ago so it shouldn’t be a clutch issue). As this is a 5 speed gearbox I wouldn’t have thought that this should be a problem as it’s the same gearbox that I have in my Mk1 which has never had any problems like this.

There’s a whirring sound a bit like worn brake pads coming from the rear that sounds somewhat ominous but goes away when I put the clutch in. The sound is only present at 50+ Mph.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Easiest/most common fault is clutch slave cylinder.

Making your gears hard to disengage, because the clutch is dragging. Check the small clutch reservoir to see if it's low. Also put the car on full left lock, and peer in to see the clutch slave cylinder on the side of the bell housing - look for signs of leads. Sometimes if you squeeze the rubber boot fluid will weep out.

The slave is easy and dirt cheap (c£12) to replace. Very common fault and gears becoming hard to engage is the most obvious symptom.

Also worth checking / replacing the gearbox oil including the oil in the shifter turret.
