We used to run a car review page on our website.

The premise was my 10 year old lad was shown a pic and asked to rate the car.

Without fail, single make forums reacted badly to a poor 'review', some went OTT, AlfaOwner went nuclear. All over some spoof 'review' by a 10 yr old kid.

There was the obvious name-calling, but we also had threats of physical violence. biggrin

I should have sued for his PTSD but unfortunately he found the abuse hilarious and he was a legend in the playground (but the mates' Mums were unimpressed).
Man I loved that site

How are they "targeting" you?
I've slagged off most things on here over the yrs, hell I treat most ppl on ph with contempt because they usually deserve it for being dull fkwits and to be honest I never even remember the usernames of who said what from thread to thread. Wtf would you care about what anyone who drives pissant hatches says? When they get decent car then they might say something worthwhile.
Reporting threads that I start, taking what I write out of context to make me look bad, real childish stuff. I'm just wandering if it's a Honda thing, seems to be a problem across the board. Rather amusing to be honest...
Seriously? Taking things out of context? O. M. G.
Here's a hintold boy, instead of giving them a context to twist just say "mate, her car is st, now fk off" and make it damn blatent. Oh yes and grow a pair.

The worst for me has been Porsche so far.

Everyone appears to be in one room, we have Hartech thrusting from behind whislt you suck of Raby and get ready as LN engineering is winding up their ceramic bearings to ram up your jaffa. Then you have Center Gravity about to let go in your mouth whilst charging £350 for an alignment all whilst Hartech has bashed through so hard that he is now eyeing up anyone and everyone demanding everyone looks at his massive we are the best shlong.

If you think the honda vtec lot are bad (all that lag & no boost!), try telling the GT-R fanbois that actually a 911 turbo is a much better car...

I've told them that all owners of the new turbo type r should be made to wear these whilst out shopping so that normal people can laugh at them, it's not gone down to well...

All these comments are so true.

But what about when the car in question isn't even performance, i.e. M badged.

The criticism gets them all butt hurt.

Look M badgers it's not a M3, now deal with it.

I love the idea of a post-it note with "Not an" written on it, to be stuck in front of the M badge on the offender's car. hehe

It's the sheep herd mentality of humans, the weak ones anyway. Strength in numbers, can't make your own way through so follow the rest.

I like a good classic car show as much as anyone, but the bitter tribalism can be right in your face at these events. Fenced off Escorts over here, fenced off Granadas way over there, etc. the event organisers wouldn't dare let them be close. Much more fun to have the cars arranged randomly IMHO. The internet allows it to ramp up to eleven, infighting between differing marks of the same model FFS.

Actual fist fights in Australia between Ford and Holden tribes, all very ugly.

And we say Mumsnet is a nest of vipers!

Got to laugh. Try owning an NSX and saying it doesn't suit you. Better still test drive a few S2000's and detail why the DC2 is a better road car. Honda owners are the worst especially the financially superior ones! Then on here we have the Haldex bore who absolutely will not let a rwd car enter a discussion, what was it last time 'lateral traction' hilarious. I stay away from one make forums and also anything remotely to do with a car meet. IME they're generally populated by a bunch of boring farts who want to tell you that the spring clip on your rad hose isn't a standard part. If there is a 'hoon' it's all about how much attention a bunch of middle aged men can draw in town followed by bursts of acceleration between corners. A tragic way to spend time.

I suppose you either have a 'club' mentality or you don't, saying that as a resource they can be very valuable. Join them, take what you need but don't get drawn in, meh

I try to stay away from one-make manufacture car forums nowadays. They can be a tight bunch with a stereotype attitude.

Unfortunately as I've experienced it alienates many enthusiasts from using their forums.
Spot on. I joined a couple of forums relating to my RS2000 and found similar: I injured my face (with an angle grinder) a while back while working on my RS and I dared to post that I was thinking of selling it as a project...I was damn near strung up.

I'm on a Z3 forum too, which was useful as I got hold of a hardtop locally for a good price. However, the same one make blinkered view that no other car is as good just got to me: I know the Z3 isn't the last word in handling, nor the fastest car I could have bought and the looks aren't to everyone's taste, but I enjoy it AND accept the above. I don't feel the need to 'convert'everyone else to my view point.

Still I can log back on any time I need some information, spare parts or when it comes to selling either car as one make forums always seem to over value their cars. wink

Outside of car forums I'm into guitars, drums and home cinema. You see silly arguments about which brand of guitar/drum/speaker/etc is the best and the herd mentality showing through. If they were all sat in a pub discussing it then I'm sure it would be different, but on forums it seems to get so personal and insulting at times...quite sad really.
