Mikhail Aleshin had a big crash in practice at the Fontana track. Initially knocked unconscious he regained consciousness and was airlifted to a nearby medical centre, complaining of pain in his right shoulder and foot.

As we've seen in other oval races recently the fence gave way, not as bad as the Nationwide race at Daytona last year, but nevertheless its not good.

Glad to hear he is (relatively) ok, it could have been much, much worse given the number of other cars in the vicinity.

ETA: Update from Marshall Pruett
@mikhailaleshin update: fractured ribs, broken right clavicle, concussion and chest injuries. He's listed in serious but stable condition.

Amazing response speed from the marshalls/crew, they arrived just as the cars had stopped moving!

Hope he is ok & makes a good recovery.

As above - amazing how quickly the recovery crews where with the car. It had barely stopped before they were on it.

Incredible reaction to be on it so fast.

almost too quick given that other car was still out of control and almost hit the truck

was that a case of the car on the apron taking air from the faster car or maybe was it dropping fluids?

I was looking for the cause and to me it looked like he actually put the front left tyre down below the white line onto the apron. I assume that the change in banking between the track, and the apron below the white line, which he was slightly across, upset the balance of the car and span him round

Final race and car into catch fencing. Bad memories. Hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Mesh on the catch fencing did a decent job there IMO, as that could have been a great deal worse. As much as I enjoy Indycar, always tend to watch superspeedway races from behind the sofa.

I wince whenever I see an Indy car stopped the circuit but unable to see the oncoming traffic - there's a few lock up in an attempt to a avoid collecting the crashing car. And then the safety car (truck) belts in!
