I have to get a tax disc for my elderly mother's car (she's long since stopped driving).

AsMID indicates that the car is uninsured (not possible to just ask her if the car is insured - things a bit difficult just now).

I had it MOTd (yesterday).

If I go to the post office with my own insurance certificate for my own car (which says I'm insured 3rd party for any car not owned by me etc.) - will they be ok with that and be able to tax the car for me?

Thanks.

Don't think you have to got to the Post Office with any documents, other than the VED reminder as it's all electronic. With that in mind and as the car doesn't have specific Insurance relating to it, I can't see that you will be allowed to buy VED with your own Insurance documents.

The OP will need to take the vehicle's MoT (and application for a tax disc and money), that's all - insurance status isn't checked at the post office (not since last December).

Insurance is checked regularly under CIE (the Continual Insurance Enforcement 'scheme') though, where if a vehicle is taxed then it must also be insured - and regular data matching exercises are made between the MIB and DVLA databases...

OP, you will need to insure the vehicle in its own right fairly soon (as in days rather than in weeeks) if it is being taxed wink .

That has to be a first on PH; a perfectly answered question.

You don't even need to provide an MOT now, TBH I'm not even sure that the Post Office actually check the insurance status of a car on any databases; I work in the trade and have gone to get tax from the Post Office with only the V5C a few days prior to handing the car over knowing that the customer hasn't insured the car yet, I don't think it is the Post Offices responsibility to ensure that the car is insured, it is down to the owner.
