Ml 280 sport gearbox

Hi wife has ml 280, over the last few months the car would sometimes stay in gear not changing,so pull over turn off and start up fine for a few days / weeks ...it's now clunking into 1st but won't change even turning off and restarting? Staying in 1st..and will select reverse...disconnected battery for few mins still the same ....ideals guys b4 the Mercedes garage ..lol
