After 4 x Tom Toms and 1 x Snooper I have decided to give the Garmin a go. Mainly because of not having to Bluetooth into my smartphone. Garmin apparently have a shiney new satellite that means super quick updates.

Garmin NUVI 2569 LMT-D (latest touch screen, digital traffic and lifetime updates)

High Speed Multi Changer

Sendai 5" sat nav Accessory Pack inc home charger and case

£149.99

BOOOOM!

£139.99 for the unit at Currys and PC World

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/phones-broadband-gps/...

Budget case and charger probably about £7.00 off ebay.

The case should have been £25 and the high speed charger £15 so I still saved £30, ok not a massive saving but I'm happy

Yes, good price for a high street store - and good to get the pack thrown in, thats where they normally catch people and make most of their money on things like that.

Got a Nuvi 52 from Halfords on friday for my son for £70, which was the same price as Amazon, etc were doing it.

Good to see that the High Street stores are starting to match internet prices more readily - always nicer to walk in and get the thing, rather than wait several days for the postie to deliver it smile

Am thinking of upgrading my unit soon (five year old Nuvi, but with the latest maps) - that one of yours does traffic jam detection etc - have you had a chance to try it yet? Would you recommend one?

Does it need phone data for traffic? That is what has made me stick with TT until now.

The reason I didn't go for a tomtom was because I didn't want to have to Bluetooth it to my phone ( I haven't got unlimited data!) Apparently Garmin have just stuck a brand new satellite into space which is why their digital traffic works so well. The digital traffic system uses the power lead as an antenna so if you want traffic you need to be plugged in! The screen is like an IPhone, very nice to use. The mrs will try it out tomorrow when she drive from Surrey to Walsall. smile

Garmin v Tom Tom.

A bit like BMW v Mercedes. Everybody has a preference but really you would not feel hard done by either way.

I would put that the other way round. Each to his\her own and you entitled to your opinion - even tho you are very wrong. wink

I got a 2548LMT-D from Halfords for a straight £100, allegedly ex-demo but more likely to have been returned for a firmware reboot.
The new Garmin traffic system uses a specific charger but the receiver is supposedly in the head, using the cable as an antenna (not like their older version that had a module in the cable).

Obviously the exploding Garmin will need to be replaced now, but what went wrong with all the other sat navs?

My 10+ year old Garmin could do with being replaced (can't find a way to update the maps on it) but it still works fine.

Which Garmin do you have that you can't find a way of updating, I may be able to help, have done many of them over the past decade or so.
