I am a little surprised that the media haven't been marking this a little more. Maybe they are waiting for Wednesday?

We tend to commemorate 3rd September as that is the day Britain declared war on Germany.

Yes, hence my "waiting for Wednesday" comment.

Always puzzled me they never declared war on the USSR as well.

Maybe they had a feeling that the arrangement between Germany and the Soviet Union was highly likely to be of a temporary nature?

We tried to get involved against Russia in the Winter War (Russia-Finland) but Finland refused ours and France's offers (50,000) troops. It is thought that Finland already knew we wouldn't stand a chance and opted for peace.

Personally I am glad because we wouldn't of stood a chance!

Does WW2 have a nice neat start date?

Depends on how you define WW2 I guess. Generally considered to be 1 Sept 39 - 2nd Sept 45.

But then the Finns sided with the Germans, recaptured all their lost territory from the Russians and Britain declared war on the Finns although that wasn't until the end of 1941.

Maybe we are overloaded with memories of war.I know the argument lest we forget but how long do we drag this out?

A few generations after the war born of Germans must be thinking our forefathers should have sorted the Russians out.

Now we have Putin thinking of putting the jackboot into Europe.

Well we didn't have much choice by that stage but to declare war on Finland by that stage.

It would of made an interesting scenario though. Us at war with Germany and Russia whilst Russia is also at war with Germany. A 3 way fight.

We didn't fight a war to have people saying "would of" instead of "would have".

Or maybe we did?

How come the Napoleonic war isn't classed as WW1, that spanned more than one continent too ? Technically WW2 should be WW3.

But seriously - how can there be a WW3 as there are no Russsians at all in Ukraine except for those 10 poor conscripts who accidentally walked over the border on their way to a church charity picnic.

Putin says so ... So it must be true smile
